For the Matthiessen Center
A cocktail party and outdoor screening to benefit the Peter Matthiessen Center, which will be located on the Sagaponack property of the late American novelist, naturalist, and Zen master, will be held at the Southampton Arts Center on Sunday starting at 5 p.m. with drinks, hors d’oeuvres, and an opportunity to learn more about the next phase of the campaign.
“No Boundaries,” an hourlong documentary about Matthiessen by Jeff Sewald that was originally broadcast on PBS, will be shown at 6:30. Glenn Close narrates the film, which includes interviews with Matthiessen, book excerpts, and anecdotes from the writers Jim Harrison and Thomas McGuane, Matthiessen’s son Alex, and others.
Once restored, the writer’s former home and grounds will serve as an institute dedicated to writing, environmental conservation, social justice advocacy, and Zen Buddhism.
Tickets for the film are $25; the cocktail party is an additional $150. Reservations can be made by email to [email protected]. The arts center recommends that guests take beach chairs and blankets.
Outdoor Concert
Hopefully Forgiven, whose original music distills 100 years of American musical styles, will perform tomorrow evening at 6 at the Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill in the season’s last outdoor concert.
The band, which is led by Telly Karoussos and Brad Penuel, a pair of singer-songwriter-guitarists, with Ben Goodale on bass and Fred Trumpy on drums, mixes original songs that draw from rock, bluegrass, country, and rockabilly, with covers of songs by the Rolling Stones, the Band, and Van Morrison.
Tickets are $20, $10 for members; advance purchase with pre-event registration is required. Guests have been advised to take their own seating.
To Head Sag Cinema
James Hook has been named the new executive director of the Sag Harbor Cinema. Mr. Hook, known as Jamie, is a filmmaker, producer, and a nonprofit entrepreneur who was the founding director of the Northwest Film Forum in Seattle. Under his stewardship it grew from a single small grant into a diversified venue with two movie theaters, a film production studio, and an educational program.
Mr. Hook has also written and directed award-winning feature films, including “Vacationland,” with Karen Black, and “The Naked Proof,” which featured the sole on-screen appearance of the late playwright August Wilson. He replaces Gillian Gordon, who resigned in April.
