Bits and Pieces 6.3.21

Tue, 06/01/2021 - 16:20
Brooke Shields and Ali Wentworth will take part in All Against Abuse, the benefit for The Retreat that will take place virtually this year.

Against Abuse
All Against Abuse, a benefit for The Retreat, will take place virtually this year, on Saturday at 6 p.m., but will be no less star-studded than previous iterations, with appearances by Brooke Shields, Ali Wentworth, Alan Alda, Joy Behar, Amy Ziering, and Jaret Martino.

Among the participants, Mr. Alda will share a scary experience from his childhood that has stayed with him, while Ms. Shields and Ms. Wentworth will talk about growing up in "the business" and how that informs their relationships with their teenage daughters.

Ms. Behar, for one, articulates The Retreat's credo: "The Retreat's mission is to break the cycle of violence and restore hope . . . I've seen what intervention and prevention can do to help those struggling from abuse."

Registration for the event, which is free, is at allagainstabuse.org or by texting AAA to 91999. The website is also the place to view items in a silent auction, proceeds from which will support The Retreat.

Environmental Docs
In conjunction with its current exhibition, "Earth: Artists as Activists," the Southampton Arts Center will present three outdoor film programs, each accompanied by a panel discussion. They begin Saturday at 7 with an evening of short documentaries focused on the intersection between the human and natural worlds.

"Fantastic Fungi" is set for Sunday, also at 7. Directed by Louie Schwartzberg, the film is a time-lapse journey about the magic, mystery, and healing powers of mushrooms.

"Living Soil" tells the story of farmers, scientists, and policymakers who are working to incorporate agricultural practices to benefit soil health for years to come. Directed by Chelsea Wright, it will be shown next Thursday at 7 p.m.

More information, including the panelists for each program, is on the center"s website.

Weaving Workshop
The Watermill Center will present a virtual weaving workshop by Lua Rivera, a multidisciplinary visual artist and alumna of the center, on Saturday at 3 p.m. Ms. Rivera will demonstrate how to make a structural weaving and create a three-dimensional work from textiles. She will also experiment with different knots and textures using recycled fabrics, yarns, and ropes.

Registration for the Zoom workshop, which will be conducted in English and Spanish, is via the center's website. Tickets start at $15.
