Picasso’s 'Guernica' Focus of Marburger Lecture

Tue, 08/10/2021 - 10:15

The Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center’s annual Marburger Memorial Lecture will take place virtually this year, on Sunday at 5 p.m. via Zoom. Manuel Borja-Villel, the director of the Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid, will discuss Picasso’s 1937 painting “Guernica,” the artist’s response to the bombing of that city during the Spanish Civil War.

The painting was entrusted to the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan in 1939 at the artist’s request, and it remained there until it returned to Spain in 1981.

Mr. Borja-Villel, who has been director of the Reina Sofia museum since 2008, will explain in his talk, “Visions of ‘Guernica,’ ” why and how the museum has decided to revise its interpretation of the painting.

A Zoom link is on the study center’s website.

Say Cheese (or Caviar), Day or Night

Self Provisions, a storefront attached to Cavaniola’s Gourmet Cheese in Sag Harbor, is “always open,” as is proclaimed by an illuminated sign on the wall at the entrance. Two large, brightly lit vending machines dominate the space, with offerings ranging from sea salt crackers and slabs of French butter to jars of caviar and curated gift boxes — and, of course, cheese.
