The Music Scene 03.17.22

Mon, 03/14/2022 - 15:31
The New Millennium Little Big Band will perform two concerts at the Southampton Cultural Center this weekend.

Rock for Ukraine
The Suffolk Theater in Riverhead will host "All for Ukraine," a star-studded benefit concert, on March 27 at 6 p.m. The lineup will include G.E. Smith with Taylor Barton Smith, Gene Casey and the Lone Sharks, Bryan Gallo, Amber Ferrari, the HooDoo Loungers, Corky Laing, Cassandra House, and the Kerry Kearney Band, with more acts likely to be added.

"We have a stage, we have incredibly talented and generous musicians all around us, and a community that is capable of doing a whole lot of good," said Gary Hygom, the theater’s executive director. Everybody involved with the show is working for free.

Tickets are $50 and available from the theater’s website. One hundred percent of proceeds will go directly to UNICEF, Doctors Without Borders, and the United Ukrainian American Relief Committee. On checkout, ticket buyers will be able to specify which organization they wish to support.

Pop and Jazz
The Southampton Cultural Center’s live music series will conclude this weekend with performances by the New Millennium Little Big Band on Saturday evening at 7 and Sunday afternoon at 2.

The group is a scaled-down version of the New Millennium Jazz Band, whose 18 musicians have been performing the music of Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin, Dean Martin, Sam Cooke, Michael Buble, and others, as well as Latin jazz, since 2012.

The Little Big Band is made up of nine musicians who will be backing the vocalist Laura Laureano. While the set list includes such popular rock titles as "September," "Sweet Caroline," and "More Today Than Yesterday," it will also draw from the music of Sinatra and other legendary crooners. Darren Ottati, a frequent performer at the cultural center, will sing a few numbers as well.

Tickets are $30.

More Jazz
The Southampton Arts Center, in collaboration with Hamptons Jazz Fest, will host Manuel Valera and New Cuban Express on Friday for an evening of jazz and cocktails.

A Grammy nominee, Mr. Valera has worked as a pianist and composer with Arturo Sandoval, Paquito D’Rivera, Dafnis Prieto, John Benitez, Samuel Torres, and many other jazz notables.

Influenced by the experiments of Cuban artists from the 1970s and ‘80s, Manuel Valera and New Cuban Express mixes elements of jazz, R&B, fusion, and funk with Cuban music styles.

A social hour with the musicians and bar service will begin at 6; the concert will start at 7. Tickets are $20, $15 for members.

Music at Masonic
The music series at the Masonic Temple in Sag Harbor is offering something for every taste during the coming week. Bingo Bango!, a retro pop-inspired East End cover band, will bring the music of the Beatles, the Mamas and the Papas, Carl Perkins, the B52s, and other hitmakers to the Inner Sanctum on Saturday at 8 p.m.

On Sunday afternoon from 3 to 5, Robert Secrist, a virtuoso guitarist who studied under Andres Segovia and made his professional debut at Carnegie Hall, will perform works from his all-Bach album, plus selections from the classical guitar canon. Tickets to both concerts are $20.

The Jam Session will return for its weekly concert of live jazz with guest musicians on Tuesday evening at 7. Tickets are $15.
