The Peconic Land Trust has announced its spring 2022 series of talks and tours.
It begins on March 12 at Bridge Gardens in Bridgehampton with a tree identification walk on the grounds. Participants will learn to identify trees in their winter form, using bark, buds, and branches as guides. Tom Volk of Summerhill Landscapes will lead the tour.
On March 26, gardeners and aspiring arborists will learn early spring care of fruit trees. Also held outdoors, the event offers access to the wisdom and experience of Paul Wagner of Greener Pastures Organics and the garden's director, Rick Bogusch.
Starting seeds is the focus of a free March 26 get-together at Quail Hill Farm in Amagansett, where the farm is seeking volunteers to help start crops for this year. Layton Guenther, the farm's director, will lead participants in planting a variety of seeds in trays for the greenhouse. Making and using compost will also be discussed. Participants can return on May 14 to transplant their seedlings into the ground.
On April 23, Mr. Bogusch will reveal the secrets to growing food crops in raised bed and container gardens. He will demonstrate how a sunny area and a pot filled with soil can lead to a mini harvest.
Quail Hill will have a Wednesday lecture on its background and history on April 27. The biodynamic farm has grown from its humble beginnings in 1990 to become one of the longest continually operated community supported agriculture programs in the country. Mr. Guenther will share this history and some of the stories behind the farm and farmers who keep it going. After the talk, guides will be available for trail walking in nearby Stony Hill.
Each event starts at 10 a.m. and is $5 (not including the free seed planting at Quail Hill), or free for members. Space is limited. Reservations are required at 631-283-3195, extension 122, or by emailing [email protected]. Bridge Gardens' address is 36 Mitchell Lane. Quail Hill is on Deep Lane in Amagansett.
