Bits and Pieces 08.11.22

Mon, 08/08/2022 - 14:09
Teal Wicks will appear in the Broadway Out East series at Calissa in Water Mill.

Creative Jazz
David Leon, a Cuban-American saxophonist, woodwinds player, and composer-improviser, is next up in the music series at the Arts Center at Duck Creek in Springs on Saturday at 5 p.m. For "Bird's Eye," his most recent ensemble piece, he will be accompanied by Doyeon Kim on gayageum, a Korean plucked zither, and Lesley Mok on percussion.

Inspired by the folkloric music of Cuba and Korea, Mr. Leon's compositions weave rigorous ensemble writing and guided improvisation to investigate collectivity.

A Survival Drama
"No Place on Earth," a Holocaust documentary nominated for best screenplay by the Writers Guild of America, will have its East End premiere Thursday evening at 7:30 at the Jewish Center of the Hamptons in East Hampton.

Directed by Janet Tobias, the 2012 film was inspired by Chris Nicola's book "The Secret of Priest's Grotto," which chronicles what the explorer found in a cave in Southwestern Ukraine in 1993.

The discovery of a shoe, a key, cookware, and other signs of human habitation led to Mr. Nicola's uncovering a harrowing story. In 1942, 38 men, women, and children sought refuge from the Nazis in an underground hole, where they created their own society and survived for 511 days.

Tickets are $25, $20 for members.

From the Choral Society
The Choral Society of the Hamptons is seeking a permanent part-time music director whose term will begin in February 2023. In collaboration with the society's board of directors and administrative director, the music director will be responsible for a minimum of two concerts per year, including conducting rehearsals, auditioning new singers, establishing schedules and budgets, setting objectives, and selecting programming repertoire.

Interested candidates can submit a resume and artistic statement, including their philosophy and approach to conducting, program development, and repertoire selection to [email protected].

Coming to Calissa
Broadway Out East, a series of performances by Broadway stars, has returned to Calissa, the Mediterranean restaurant in Water Mill. Thursday's 8 p.m. show, which will take place under a tent in the garden, will star Teal Wicks, whose Broadway credits include "The Cher Show," "Finding Neverland," "Jekyll & Hyde," and "Wicked."

Kathryn Allison, the star of "Company," will perform next Thursday, and the Tony Award nominee Brandon Victor Dixon will close out the series on Aug. 25.

Dinner and the show come with a $100 minimum per person. Reservations can be made on the restaurant's website.

Standup, and The Dead
Joe Gatto, a comedian, actor, and producer best known for the television shows "Impractical Jokers" and "The Misery Index," will bring his standup comedy to the Clubhouse in East Hampton tonight at 7. Tickets start at $75.

Dark Star Orchestra, whose shows are based on a set list from the Grateful Dead's 30 years of touring, will perform at the Clubhouse on Sunday at 7; the doors will open at 6. Tickets are $100, $125 at the door. Anyone planning to park must buy a $30 parking pass.

Designer Showhouse
The Hampton Designer Showhouse will return this week with a house north of Southampton Village on an Edge of Woods Road property dating back to the 1830s. A group of 20 designers from the East End, New York City, and beyond will transform the spaces within the house, which will open for public tours on Sunday.

A benefit preview cocktail will be held on Saturday night for $225. Regular visits, which are offered daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., cost $40 and will continue through Sept. 25.

The Sweet Smell of Nostalgia at Sagaponack General

Stepping into the new Sagaponack General Store, which reopened yesterday after being closed since 2020, is a sweet experience, and not just because there’s a soft-serve ice cream station on the left and what promises to be the biggest penny candy selection on the South Fork on your right, but because it’s like seeing an old friend who, after some struggle, made it big. Really, really big.
