Bits and Pieces 08.18.22

Mon, 08/15/2022 - 11:50
Bay Street Theater will hold its late-season benefit in the barn at the Topping Rose House.

Love and Holocaust
A garden tea party and book event will be held on the grounds of the Leiber Collection in Springs on Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. Mindelle Pierce will discuss her new book, "Love With No Tomorrow -- Tales of Romance During the Holocaust," which tells the love stories of 27 couples who met before and during the Holocaust, including Judith and Gerson Leiber.

Judith, the celebrated handbag designer, and Gerson, a modernist artist, met on the war-ravaged streets of Budapest in 1945, fell in love, courted, and married as the country rebuilt itself, before moving to the United States in 1946.

Tickets are free and available from the collection's website.

Shakespeare Alfresco
The Southampton Cultural Center will bring the Queens-based Hip to Hip Theatre Company's free Shakespeare in the Parks series to Agawam Park with productions of "The Adventures of Pericles," set for Friday, and "Much Ado About Nothing," for Saturday, both at 7:30 p.m.

In "The Adventures of Pericles," the Prince of Tyre finds his life is in danger after solving the puzzle of a murderous king. Forced to flee, he embarks on an odyssey in search of adventure, riches, and a lost princess, before being reunited with his loved one.

The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust succinctly sums up the Bard's comedy "Much Ado About Nothing": "Benedick and Beatrice don't love each other, but then they do. Claudio and Hero love each other but then they don't, but then they do again. Everyone gets married."

Blankets, low chairs, and picnics have been suggested for theatergoers.

Bevy of Benefits
As the summer winds down, so do the benefits, but Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor, Guild Hall, and the Hampton Theatre Company have all scheduled fund-raisers for this weekend.

Bay Street will host an evening of cocktails, dinner, and entertainment starting Thursday at 6:30 in the barn at Topping Rose House in Bridgehampton. Madeline Myers will perform selections from her new bound-for-Broadway musical, "Double Helix," and the Broadway stars Bobby Conte Thornton and Alex Wyse will also take the stage. Tickets start at $1,500.

Guild Hall will honor the philanthropist Kathy Raynor on Friday at the Mulford Farm in East Hampton. The evening will begin with cocktails at 6, followed by dinner at 7. Dancing to music by D.J. Mick will conclude the festivities. Tickets start at $1,400, $500 for those aged 21 to 40.

A benefit cocktail party for the Hampton Theatre Company will take place Saturday evening from 6 to 8 at a private venue in Quogue. In addition to cocktails, music, and hors d'oeuvres, Lanford Wilson's short comedy "Abstinence" will be performed at 7. Tickets are $150, $100 for those under 30.

Billy Joel Onscreen
In advance of its worldwide release in October, the Sag Harbor Cinema will host a sneak preview of the newly restored and re-mixed 1990 concert film, "Billy Joel: Live at Yankee Stadium," on Monday evening at 6.

In addition to having been re-edited in 4K with Dolby ATMOS audio, the film features newly added material, including a never-before-released performance of "Uptown Girl," interviews with Mr. Joel, and backstage footage.

Tickets are currently sold out, but the cinema has suggested checking its website for updates. It will hold additional screenings when the film is released in October.

Montauk in Amagansett
The Montauk Project will take the stage Friday night at 8 at the Stephen Talkhouse. The band expects to perform at least two brand-new tunes among its ever-evolving rock-grunge-psychedelic lineup of original songs. Tickets are $40.
