The Art Scene 09.08.22

Mon, 09/05/2022 - 10:48
Salomon Huerta's untitled still-life painting of orange slices and a handgun will be at Harper's Chelsea 534.

New at Duck Creek
Exhibitions of mixed-media paintings by Jesse McCloskey in the Little Barn and sculpture by Sally Richardson in the Little Gallery will open Saturday at the Arts Center at Duck Creek in Springs and continue through Oct. 16.

Mr. McCloskey created the works in the "Night Gallery" series during lockdown, by cutting and collaging shapes of paper and other mixed media, looking for what Willem de Kooning called the "flickering glimpse" of form.

Ms. Richardson, who has lived in Montauk for 20 years, uses only hand tools -- mallets, chisels, and rasps -- to carve both wood and stone into human and plant-like forms.

Receptions will be held on Saturday, from 4 to 6 p.m. for Ms. Richardson and from 5 to 7 p.m. for Mr. McCloskey.

Dreaming the Desert
"Enter Through the Desert," an exhibition of paintings and ceramics by Sabra Moon Elliot, will open Saturday at Tripoli Gallery in Wainscott with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. It will run through Oct. 10.

During lockdown, Ms. Elliot had recurring dreams about the desert involving cacti, warm colors, and portals of entry. After several months, she, her husband, and her daughter drove to New Mexico, Colorado, and Texas.

The works in the exhibition are informed not only by the landscape and sunsets of the West, but also by the mystical nature of her experience there.

Glimmer Garden
"The Glimmering," a performance event by the projection artist Christine Sciulli and the East End band Student Body, will enliven the garden at the Leiber Collection in Springs on Sunday evening from 7 to 9. The free event will include wine, cheese, and dancing.

The doors will open at 6:30; a registration link is at leibermuseum.org.

Art and Street Food
Karyn Mannix Contemporary has organized a group exhibition of painting, sculpture, and photography that will be on view at Ashawagh Hall in Springs Friday through Sunday. A reception, with music by Out East and a food truck from El Jefe, will be held on Saturday from 4 to 8 p.m.

Summer Finale
The Thirty Squared Art Group was formed in 2015 when the artist Aubrey Grainger challenged her Facebook friends to produce 30 paintings in 30 days. Work by 21 of those artists, including Ms. Grainger, is on view at the Water Mill Museum through Sept. 18, with a reception slated for Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m. Portions of sales will help support the museum.

Subculture Slang
"What Now Who How," a show of paintings by Glen Baldridge, is at Halsey McKay Gallery in East Hampton through Oct. 30. Drawing from subculture slang, the phrases "No Way" and "What Now Who How" are hidden in his gouache paintings-on-paper, in which letters morph into forms that take the shapes of an owl and branches.

Armory Week
Although some will always associate March with the Armory Show art fair and its associated satellite fairs, it seems to have found a permanent home in September post-Covid.

The big fair runs from Friday through Sunday at the Javits Center in Manhattan with a V.I.P. preview today. Those attending may recognize some familiar names from the South Fork, including the Eric Firestone and Halsey McKay galleries, which are both exhibiting there.

Other significant fairs that have followed the Armory to this new time of year are the Independent fair (which will include Montauk's the Ranch and the paintings of Werner Büttner in its 20th century section) and Spring/Break Art Show, both opening and closing around the same time. The Art Dealers Association of America's Art Show, which used to be in the late winter, will be mounted in November, and Frieze New York has returned to its regular early May dates. Art on Paper is also back and will show MM Fine Art through Sunday.

More detailed information about operating hours and tickets is on the fairs' individual websites.

Language and Tactility
"Visible Language," a show of work by Darlene Charneco and Alex Vignoli, will open Friday at Oscar Molina Gallery in Southampton with a reception from 5 to 8 p.m.

Ms. Charneco's three-dimensional works reflect her wide-ranging interests, among them microcosms, macrocosms, the evolution of communication networks, and the importance of symbiosis both biologically and culturally.

"Livros (Books)" and "Too Many Stories" are series of works by Mr. Vignoli that feature books and periodicals as the subject matter, especially the sculptural qualities derived from rolling and folding them.

Draped Paintings
"Can Women Have One-Man Shows?" — an exhibition of draped and pleated paintings by Nina Yankowitz from the 1960s and '70s — will open Friday at Eric Firestone Gallery at 40 Great Jones Street in Lower Manhattan, with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m.

Ms. Yankowitz, who divides her time between SoHo and Sag Harbor, abandoned wooden supports for her "Draped Paintings" series, which consists of unstretched canvases sprayed with acrylic paint and hung on walls in loose, cascading folds. For her "Pleated Paintings" series, she ran lengths of canvas through pleating machines before spraying and hanging them.

The show will run through Oct. 16.

Call for Artists
The East End Arts and Humanities Council has issued an open call for artists to participate in its 2022 open juried exhibition, "50 Reasons Why: Your Take on the East End." Submitted works are expected to express the artists' feelings about the region, "whether it's a memory, experience, favorite place, or commentary."

The deadline for submissions is Sept. 30. The exhibition will showcase 50 chosen works at the EEA Art Gallery and the 11 West Gallery, both in Riverhead, from Nov. 12 through Dec. 17. More information and an application link can be found at eastendarts.org.

Maverick Painter
Nela Arias-Misson (1915-2015) was a Cuban-born artist who exhibited internationally and was friendly with many artists of the New York School, among them Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, and Robert Motherwell.

After moving to Spain in 1960, her work moved into "uncharted waters," according to an essay by George Negroponte for the exhibition of her paintings that will open Saturday at Keyes Art in Sag Harbor, with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. The paintings on view, pre-conscious and fueled by fantasy, highlight her singular artistic evolution.

The show will continue through Oct. 23.

Ceramics and Oils
"Rocks Waves Clouds: Vessels and Paintings," a show of work by Peter Schlesinger, is now at the David Lewis Gallery in East Hampton. The exhibition includes new ceramic sculptures with a patterned-ash glaze, the most ancient form of glazing, as well as paintings inspired by the landscape of a small Swedish island the artist and his partner visited in 2014.

The exhibition will remain on view through Oct. 8.

At Harper's Chelsea
Harper's Gallery is opening two shows Thursday in Chelsea that will run through Oct. 22. "Parallax," at 512 West 22 Street, showcases the paintings of Allie McGhee, whose lyrical works, rendered in swirling blasts of industrial paint and found media, are inspired by cosmology, African symbolism, and the rhythms of free jazz.

"Daily Ritual," at 534 West 22 Street, features Salomon Huerta's paintings of handguns placed in otherwise ordinary still-life compositions. As a boy, the artist says, he would bring his father pre-supper snacks at a table that invariably included a revolver, which his father kept for protection in the public housing development where they lived.

White Room in Motion
"Movement" is the title of an exhibition now at the White Room Gallery in Bridgehampton that explores the beauty of movement in painting, photography, and sculpture.

Participating artists include Craig Alan, Barbara Cole, Edward Lentsch, Stuart Yankell, Robert Georgio, and Linda Zacks. A reception is set for Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m.; the show will continue through Oct. 10.
