Animals and Money
"Creation of the Animals," multi-layered paintings by Linda Gottesfeld, and "Face Value," paintings by Jenna Lash, will open at the Sara Nightingale Gallery in Sag Harbor on Saturday with a reception from 4 to 6:30 p.m.
Inspired by Tintoretto's painting "The Creation of the Animals," Ms. Gottesfeld's new series features animal forms that emerge from densely painted surfaces. Hovering between abstraction and figuration, the canvases are built up with paint that is rolled, brushed, drawn, and stenciled through an intuitive process whereby one mark leads to the next.
Ms. Lash's interest in money as a subject for art dates back more than 20 years. The large paintings in "Face Value" focus on American currency, with a particular interest in the face. In some, such as "Lincoln, United States 5 Dollar Bill," the president is rendered head-on and close up, while in others the bills, and faces, are crumpled.
The exhibitions will continue through Nov. 18.
Four at Keyes Art
