Chisholm Channeled at LTV

Tue, 10/01/2024 - 12:27
In her one-woman show, “Shirley Chisholm: Unbossed and Unbowed,” Ingrid Griffith portrays the barrier-shattering congresswoman from Brooklyn.

LTV has lined up another weekend of eclectic programming, starting tomorrow with two performances, at 10 a.m. and 7:30 p.m., of “Shirley Chisholm: Unbossed and Unbowed,” a one-woman show written by and starring Ingrid Griffith.

Born in Brooklyn to immigrant parents, in 1968 Chisholm became the first Black woman elected to Congress, where she represented a Brooklyn district centered in Bedford-Stuyvesant for seven terms. In 1972, she became the first Black candidate and the first woman to run for a major-party presidential nomination.

Chisholm worked to improve opportunities for inner-city residents, supported increases for a variety of social services, and was an advocate for the Equal Rights Amendment.

Ms. Griffith, an actor based in New York, has been touring “Unbossed and Unbowed” across the nation, in the hope that Chisholm’s largely unheard story will help catalyze social change. The recipient of a Danny Glover Power of Dream Award (2022) and a Guyana Cultural Award (2023), she was a 2023 Suzi Bass Award nominee for outstanding principal performer in a play.

Tickets are $20, $25 at the door, $50 for cafe table seating.

Speaking of good causes, Our Fabulous Variety Show will hold its third annual Guardians Gala, a benefit for student performers in need of financial assistance, on Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. The event honors Alessandra Grangeiro and Kathryn Menu, OFVS board members and supporters.

The evening will include music and dancing, drinks, pop-up performances from the Siren Sisters drag queens, a pizza truck, appetizers from Golden Pear and Saaz, and Mister Softee ice cream.

Among the items to be auctioned are two weeks at Hayground summer camp, one week at Breakwater Yacht Club summer camp, surf camp with Mike Poli, and a challah bread-making event. Local businesses have contributed various items for a raffle.

Tickets are $40 per person, $70 per couple; OFVS crew members can attend for $25. V.I.P. tables are available via a link on LTV’s website.

The Sweet Smell of Nostalgia at Sagaponack General

Stepping into the new Sagaponack General Store, which reopened yesterday after being closed since 2020, is a sweet experience, and not just because there’s a soft-serve ice cream station on the left and what promises to be the biggest penny candy selection on the South Fork on your right, but because it’s like seeing an old friend who, after some struggle, made it big. Really, really big.
