At the Talkhouse
The Stephen Talkhouse in Amagansett has a full slate of programs through New Year’s Eve, starting Friday with sets by Friday Night Traditional, at 8 p.m., and Rum Punch Mafia at 10.
On his Instagram page, the singer-songwriter Brad Penuel says he usually returns to Alabama for Christmas, but this year Friday Night Traditional will “bring some Bama to the Talkhouse.” Tickets are $30.
Rum Punch Mafia, a band of local musicians based in Southampton, draws from roots, rock, and reggae, with an emphasis on roots reggae and the Bob Marley playlist. Tickets are $10.
The Cherry Bombs will return to the Talkhouse on Saturday at 8. The (mostly) female band, which has performed hits from the 1980s in Manhattan at Mercury Lounge and the Cutting Room, will debut several new songs along with classics by the Pretenders and U2. Tickets are $25.
LHT (Little Head Thinks) will bring its eclectic mix of covers from the 1970s, ’80s, and ’90s to Amagansett, as well as some of its own original material, on Saturday at 10. LHT has shared the stage with G.E. Smith, Chad Smith, and Jimmy Buffett. The cost is $15.
After a five-day hiatus, the Talkhouse will reopen on Friday, Dec. 27, at 8 with Telly and Band. With lyrical prowess reminiscent of Leonard Cohen and a vocal aptitude that runs the gamut from Anthony Kiedis to Roy Orbison, Telly Karoussos has crafted a sound he can call his own. Tickets are $20.
Later that evening, at 10, Dizzy After Midnight will take the stage. The four-piece band covers anything from Lada Gaga to Matchbox Twenty to Tom Petty, and “just about everything in between,” according to the Talkhouse. Tickets are $10.
The Roses Grove Band, known for its improvisation of the Grateful Dead’s folk-rock and Americana sound, will bring extended jams, unique segues, and delicate transitions between songs to Amagansett on Dec. 28 at 8. Tickets are $20. It will be followed at 10 by Hi Def, an interactive party band that says it combines “dynamic singing, top-notch musicianship, and years of experience.” Tickets are $11.89.
New Year’s Eve at the Talkhouse will kick off at 8 with the Kissed by a Prince Tribute Band, all of whose members have been inspired by the music of Prince. The group includes such noted local musicians as Mike Mazzaraco, Kevin Santacroce, Klyph Black, Carolina Kohn, Bill Smith, and Paul Giannini.
The venue’s New Year’s Eve party begins at 10 with Hello Brooklyn, a New York City-based cover band that has been performing since 2011. Tickets are $50.
Eclectic Lineup at the Suffolk
The Suffolk Theater in Riverhead is hosting its annual Classical Christmas Spectacular tomorrow at 8 p.m. The 30-piece Long Island Concert Orchestra will perform selections from Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker,” Handel’s “Messiah,” Beethoven’s “Choral Fantasy,” Campogrande’s “Concerto for Audience,” R. Vaughan Williams’s “Greensleeves,” and more.
Tickets range from $59 to $79.
The theater will shift from classical to the Lords of 52nd Street, who will bring the music of Billy Joel to Riverhead on Saturday at 8 p.m. Featuring Mr. Joel’s drummer, Liberty DeVitto, and his guitarist, Russell Javors, both of whom have recorded and toured with him for over a decade, the band will perform the hits that helped establish the Piano Man’s formidable sound.
Tickets are $49 to $65, and only a handful remain.
That ’70s Band will bring the disco days of Studio 54 to the Suffolk on Dec. 31. The New Year’s Eve celebration will feature the music of Earth, Wind, and Fire; the Commodores; Donna Summer; the Bee Gees, and KC and the Sunshine Band, among others. There will be an open dance floor, hats, noisemakers, and streamers, a live stream of the Times Square ball drop, and a complimentary champagne toast at midnight.
A few $125 tickets were still available at press time.
