Two South Fork garden and art centers will have talks in New York City this week. Cassian Schmidt, a German landscape designer, professor, plantsman, and writer, will speak on "Nature as an Ecological Palette" on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. as part of the Madoo in Manhattan lecture series, a program of Sagaponack's Madoo Conservancy.
Mr. Schmidt will discuss the ecological and aesthetic potential of native and non-native dry-habitat plant communities from the North American prairie, as well as Eastern European steppe vegetation and the Mediterranean shrub steppe "garrigue."
The lecture will take place in Manhattan, at the Cosmopolitan Club, 122 East 66 Street. It will be followed by a cocktail reception at 7:30. Tickets are $150, $135 for Madoo members. Host committee tickets, priced at $350, include dinner with Mr. Schmidt after the reception. Tickets can be purchased on the Madoo website.
The Larsen Salon Series of East Hampton's LongHouse Reserve will feature a conversation between Calvin Tsao, a principal of Tsao & McKown Architects, and Sherri Donghia, a designer and creative director, on Wednesday evening at the New York Academy of Art, 111 Franklin Street in TriBeCa.
A leading voice in contemporary architecture, Mr. Tsao has taught at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, the Cooper Union, Syracuse University, and at Parsons School of Design, and has been a guest critic and lecturer at universities internationally.
The evening will begin with a reception at 6 and be followed at 6:30 by the presentation and conversation. Tickets are $75. Including a private dinner with the speakers at Il Buco restaurant, the cost is $300, $200 of which is tax-deductible.
