The Art Scene 03.21.24

Mon, 03/18/2024 - 13:37
Shirley Irons's painting "White Sumac" is part of "Osprey's Return," a new show at Sara Nightingale Gallery in Sag Harbor.

Printmaking Happening
Printaganza, a live art and printmaking event led by the master printer Dan Welden, will be held at LTV Studios in Wainscott from Friday through Sunday.

The free event brings together over 70 local artists, who will produce their own work over the weekend. Mr. Welden will create images on paper, after which the artists will start cranking up etching presses and subsequently unveil their works. Each participant will donate one work to be auctioned off in August during a benefit for LTV.

The weekend consists of six sessions, each with a host of different artists. Those who would like to sign up for a printmaking session can do so by emailing Antoinette Lanza at [email protected]. A registration link for people who want to watch is on LTV's website.

Matthew Satz Speaks
Matthew Satz, an East Hampton artist whose "Smoke Painting 4.21.15" can be seen in "Space -- Sight -- Line" at The Church in Sag Harbor, is next up in the venue's Insight Sunday series, this Sunday morning at 10:30. Known for his conceptually driven, process-oriented work, the artist will discuss his painting, its meaning, and his artistic process.

In a review of a 2013 show of Mr. Satz's work, the artist Mike Solomon wrote that "the paintings were done by allowing smoke from a burning device to be caught by the surface of his canvases. The surface would entrap the three-dimensional spires of soot as they wafted upward through space, sucking them into the top coat like some kind of weird photo process."

Tickets are $10, free for members, who are required to R.S.V.P.

Audrey Flack at 92
"Audrey Flack: With Darkness Comes Stars," a show of her latest body of work that also celebrates the publication of her memoir, will open Saturday at the Hollis Taggart Gallery in Chelsea, with a reception and book signing from 2 to 4 p.m.

Ms. Flack's recent work represents, says the gallery, a culmination of her technical skills as a draftswoman, her encyclopedic knowledge of art and the history of religion, and her appreciation of popular culture.

Her memoir, titled "With Darkness Came Stars," published by Penn State University Press, is available at bookstores and online. Signed copies will be for sale at the gallery.

The exhibition will continue through April 20.

Spring Returns to Sag
"Osprey's Return," a group show celebrating the arrival of spring, is at the Sara Nightingale Gallery in Sag Harbor. "The exhibition pulls from the palette of the osprey's natural plumage -- white, cream, and brown -- as well as its habitat," says Ms. Nightingale.

The show includes work by Paton Miller, Shirley Irons, Peter Buchman, Stephanie Brody-Lederman, Perry Burns, Kim Romero, and Christa Maiwald, among many others.

A Renewed Focus on Fresh Fish

Dock to Dish, a restaurant-supported fishery cooperative founded in Montauk in 2012, has new owners and a renewed focus on getting fresh-from-the-boat seafood directly into the kitchens of restaurants across the East End and the New York area. And the fact that most of the owners are also fishermen doesn’t hurt.
