After screening several award-winning and nominated films last year, the Hamptons International Film Festival will return this year from Oct. 4 to 14, and is now accepting submissions.

The dates mark an expansion from eight days to 11. The festival's films, talks, and events will take place all over the South Fork, according to HamptonsFilm, which organizes the festival along with other year-round programs.

Although its annual springtime Screenwriters Lab is still on the horizon -- from April 5 to 7 this year -- "we are counting the days to October," Anne Chaisson, the executive director of HamptonsFilm, said.

They are probably also counting down the hours to the Academy Awards, which will take place Sunday, to be aired on ABC. Films screened here last October as part of the festival earned 43 Oscar nominations, including best picture nods for "American Fiction," "Anatomy of a Fall," "The Holdovers," "Maestro," and "Past Lives."

Returning this year is HamptonsFilm's SummerDocs series, which "allows us to showcase some of today's most prolific documentarians and their works," according to David Nugent, the artistic director of the festival and HamptonsFilm. Coming back as well is the family-friendly outdoor series of screenings, which have taken place in East Hampton parks and beaches in previous years.

Film submissions for October's festival can be made through FilmFreeway, which also has information on deadlines and other considerations. The HamptonsFilm website will have information on upcoming programs and ticket availability throughout the year.

The Sweet Smell of Nostalgia at Sagaponack General

Stepping into the new Sagaponack General Store, which reopened yesterday after being closed since 2020, is a sweet experience, and not just because there’s a soft-serve ice cream station on the left and what promises to be the biggest penny candy selection on the South Fork on your right, but because it’s like seeing an old friend who, after some struggle, made it big. Really, really big.
