Inspired by Others
Bruce Wolosoff, a pianist, composer, and the artistic director of Reflections in Music, will return to The Church in Sag Harbor with “Music Inspired by Music” on Saturday evening at 7:30.
Composers, Mr. Wolosoff among them, are frequently inspired by other art forms, but most often by other music. Influences can be unconscious and the composers might be unaware of them, but at other times there is a more deliberate borrowing, which may or may not be acknowledged.
Saturday’s program consists of music in which the composers fully acknowledge their musical influences. It will include music by Villa-Lobos inspired by Bach, music written in the style of Borodine by Maurice Ravel, a musical portrait of Chopin by Robert Schumann, and the premiere of Mr. Wolosoff’s variations on “House of the Rising Sun.”
Tickets are $25.
Rising Stars Returns
The Rising Stars Piano Series at the Southampton Cultural Center will present a performance by Konstantin Soukhovetski, a pianist and the managing director of the series, on Saturday at 6 p.m. Going forward, the series will be renamed the Liliane Questel Recital Series, in memory of the founder of the Rising Stars series, who died in March.
Mr. Soukhovetski, who was the first pianist to perform in the series, will play a program by Questel’s favorite composers: Bach, Brahms, and Rachmaninoff, as well as his own compositions. He and Questel were close friends and eventually managed the series together.
Paul Schenly, the director of Pianofest in the Hamptons, will be the evening’s M.C. Tickets are $20 online, $25 at the door.
