The Art Scene 06.13.24

Mon, 06/10/2024 - 13:29
"Piazza Study 2," a mixed-media work by Peter Solow, will be part of "Textures," a show organized by Keyes Art.

New Season at the Ranch
The Ranch in Montauk has opened its fourth season of summer programming with Donna Dennis's installation "Deep Station" in the West Barn Gallery. Dating from 1981-1985, shown at numerous museums, and last seen at the Indianapolis Museum of Art in 1998, "Deep Station" is a physical and sonic recreation of an unpopulated, nocturnal subway station.

" 'Deep Station' is meant to be the subway at the bottom of the world," says Ms. Dennis, "as far down as you can get . . . I think of the track area as a kind of subterranean river, and the platform as a kind of ancient city on the banks of that river."

All About Surface
"Textures," a group show organized by Keyes Art of Sag Harbor, will open on Saturday at the studio of Hans Van de Bovenkamp, 93 Merchants Path in Sagaponack, with a reception from 4 to 7 p.m. It will run through July 30. The works on view explore primarily the surface, through use of bold color, alluring textures, and the choice of materials.

The exhibiting artists are Judith Henriques-Adams, Walter Bobbie, Arnold Hoffmann Jr., Nathan Slate Joseph, Ben Leone, John MacWhinnie, Maria Schon, Peter Solow, and Mr. Van de Bovenkamp.

The Shape of Memory
"Shape of Non-Beings," a solo show of work by Francisco Daniel Cabrera, can be seen in the Geri Bauer Gallery of the Hampton Library in Bridgehampton through July 20.

Born in Ecuador in 1989, Mr. Cabrera moved to East Hampton to live and work at the age of 15. He painted the works in this series from memory after visiting a place that does not exist, says the library. "There, he saw bashful colors become loquacious, shapes turn brute, orange befriend a triangle, and red fall in love with a square."

Landscapes by Women
In conjunction with the Parrish Art Museum's current exhibition "Beyond the Horizon: Interpretations of the Landscape from Women in the Permanent Collection," Sandi Haber Fifield and Laurie Lambrecht, two exhibiting artists, will be on site Friday for a gallery talk at 6 p.m.

Moderated by Brianna L. Hernandez, the museum's assistant curator, the program celebrates and recognizes the accomplishments of women artists within the Parrish collection and across the East End.

Tickets are $20; $18 for senior citizens, $15 for members' guests, $10 for members, and free for students and children.

Two at Ashawagh
An exhibition of work by Rossa Cole and Dee Coss will be at Ashawagh Hall in Springs from Friday through Sunday, with a reception set for Friday from 5 to 8 p.m.

A photographer by trade, Mr. Cole began making sculpture about 10 years ago, shifting more recently to what he calls "wall sculptures," which are made of found materials such as scrap wood, reeds, rocks, film reels, and beach glass, to name just a few.

Ms. Coss uses multiple mediums, ranging from watercolors to charcoal. She is showing landscapes and abstract works.

New at Romany Kramoris
Sag Harbor's Romany Kramoris Gallery opens a show of work by Hina Cao, Quincy Egginton, Ghilia Lipman-Wulf, and Lauren Matzen on Thursday. A reception will be held Saturday from 5 to 6:30, and the exhibition will continue through July 3.

Ms. Cao uses a variety of materials and techniques, ranging from cotton paper, homemade paper, rice paper, and bamboo paper to oil pastels, markers, ink, and more. Ms. Egginton's art has always been inspired by life at the beach.

While most of Ms. Lipman-Wulf's work is semi-abstract, she is also known for her botanicals and a love of nature and the human form. Ms. Matzen is a multimedia artist who has studied with Paton Miller.
