The Art Scene 06.06.24

Tue, 06/04/2024 - 06:26
"Then + Now" at Michael Del Piero Good Design Hamptons in Wainscott will include works on paper from the 1970s by David Slivka.

Steinberg at the Drawing Room
"Saul Steinberg: On the Table," organized in collaboration with the Saul Steinberg Foundation, is on view at the Drawing Room Gallery in East Hampton through July 7.

The exhibition features Steinberg's multidimensional exploration of still life in drawing, lithography, and wood relief sculpture, dating from the time he built his Amagansett studio in 1973 until his death in 1999.

His colored pencil drawings of tabletop arrangements depict art supplies, apples, and vases of flowers, among other subjects. His lithographs of still lifes include postcards, a Matisse still life, and a Japanese woodcut collaged onto their surfaces. His tabletop reliefs emerged from discarded scraps of the shingles and lumber used to build his studio.

Landscapes at Madoo
"The Forest Leads to the Sea," an exhibition of paintings by Jean-Philippe Delhomme, can be seen at the Madoo Conservancy in Sagaponack through June 29.

Conceived especially for Madoo, the show brings together landscape paintings executed in two places important to the artist, a Greek island he visits several times each year, and the countryside around a family residence in France. The works were executed from direct observation of the countryside, and not mediated through photography.

New at the Parrish
The Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill has announced "Fresh Paint," a new exhibition program developed in collaboration with the FLAG Art Foundation. The initiative highlights recent works by both emerging and established artists with diverse voices.

The rotating series of single-artwork shows will launch on Saturday with the installation of "pride n progress thang," a multilayered piece by Lauren Halsey, which will remain on view through Aug. 25. Based in Los Angeles, Ms. Halsey addresses issues facing people of color, queer populations, and the working class.

The FLAG Art Foundation is a "non-collecting, nonprofit exhibition space that draws from a diverse community of curators and thinkers to mount solo and thematic group exhibitions."

On Exhibition Design
The Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center in Springs will host a conversation about exhibition design with Matthew Yokobosky, the senior curator of fashion and material culture at the Brooklyn Museum, Friday at 6 p.m.

Mr. Yokobosky has designed almost 100 exhibitions, including "The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier," "Georgia O'Keeffe: Living Modern," and "Thierry Mugler: Couturissime."

Tickets are $25 and limited. Refreshments will be provided.

Small Works in Springs
"Stories," the next exhibition in the Springs Library's Small Works series, will open Friday and continue through July 8, with a reception set for Sunday morning at 11.

The works on view are in a range of mediums by a variety of Springs artists, including such notable residents as Cindy Sherman and Ross Bleckner, and two who currently attend East Hampton High School.

The artists, who include Maud Brit, Idoline Duke, Dennis Lawrence, Christa Maiwald, Pamela Morgan, Peter Dayton, and Stacie Sinder, have been asked to consider their work in terms of the story of its meaning, the story of its making, or a story it invokes.

Homemade muffins and scones will be on offer. All sales will benefit the library's upkeep.

Past and Present
"Then + Now," an exhibition organized by Coco Myers of Folioeast and Michael Del Piero, will open Friday at Michael Del Piero Good Design Hamptons in Wainscott with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m.

The "Now" component of the show includes new paintings by Beth O'Donnell, Ani Antreasyan, and Meighan Morrison; ceramics by Mitch Iburg; sculpture by Thomas Junghans; plaster art by Daniel Schneiger, and furniture by Michael Javidi.

"Then" is represented by a selection of David Slivka's oil on paper pieces from the 1970s, and his sculpture "Umbilis," which was created in 1967-68 at Southern Illinois University. The sculpture, last shown in 1968, had remained in storage until 2017, seven years after Slivka's death, when Dan Richholt, chairman of the sculpture department at Stony Brook University, cast one of the original wax shapes to finish the work.

The show will run through June 30.

Another Duality
"Heaven and Earth," a show of paintings by Mark William Wilson, opens Thursday at the Lucore Art Gallery in Montauk and will continue through June 25.

Mr. Wilson's "Heaven" series is based on the motion of the pendulum, which led Jean-Bernard-Leon Foucault to perform an experiment in 1851 that proved the rotation of the earth around the sun. The paintings and works on paper display swirling, circular patterns, light against dark, that suggest the motion of a pendulum.

In his "Earth" series, Mr. Wilson paints landscapes the palettes of which are consistent with such 19th-century landscape artists as Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot and William Merritt Chase.

A reception will be held on Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m.

One Day in the Open Air
Estia's Little Kitchen in Sag Harbor and HaubrichArt will present "Open Air Gallery/Six Artists" at the restaurant for one day only, Sunday from 4 to 6:30 p.m. The participating artists are Anthony Allison, Adriana Barone, Kirsten Benfield, Denise Gale, John Haubrich. and Christa Maiwald.

Set in the restaurant's garden, the free event will feature food and drinks.

Paintings and Watercolors
A new show at the Depot Gallery in Montauk features two separate art groups. Opening Thursday and running through June 17, it includes paintings by members of the Wednesday Group, who get together every week to paint outdoors at various East End locations.

Water+Color+Group meets on Tuesdays to explore the world of watercolors in both abstract and realistic styles.

A reception will take place Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m.

New at LTV
"Growth Phase," a group show organized by Haim Mizrahi, will open at LTV Studios in Wainscott on Saturday, with a reception from 4 to 7 p.m., and will remain on view through July 14.

The show includes work by Renee Galanti, Mariah Ke'Olani, Donna Corvi, Anthony Lombardo, Chris Lucore, and Mr. Mizrahi.

This article has been changed from its original and print versions to reflect that Peter Dayton, not Peter Spacek, is in the show at the Springs Library,
