Seven at the Depot Gallery

Thu, 08/01/2024 - 13:54
Mustafa Maluka's large-scale portraits are informed by global politics and contemporary critical theory.

The Depot Gallery in Montauk will be the site of another pop-up exhibition from Keyes Art in Sag Harbor: "Look at Me!", with work by seven artists, opening on Saturday with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. and running through Aug. 13.

Mark Hemming (1907-1999) was a self-taught artist fascinated by the human face and the human condition. Abstraction and figuration were parallel concerns for the painter Fay Lansner (1921-2010). Warren McHugh (1922-1986) of Sag Harbor was a gifted but unrecognized folk artist.

Mustafa Maluka, says the gallery, is known for his provocative large-scale portraits, while Tammy Smith's works are inspired by animals. John Pomianowski's art reflects the ocean shores of Montauk, Indonesia, Sumba, and Hawaii. Edith  Vonnegut has said her aim is to rewrite the history of women, "as I think we have been portrayed incorrectly since Eve."
