In partnership with Hamptons JazzFest, the Southampton Arts Center will host a performance by Santi Debriano, a Panamanian-born jazz double bassist and composer, on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Mr. Debriano has played or recorded with such jazz masters as Archie Shepp, Chico Freeman, Cecil Taylor, Sam Rivers, Elvin Jones, Kenny Clarke, and many others. His most recent album, “Ashanti,” was recorded with Arkestra Bembe, a large band with five horns and four rhythm sections that will accompany him on Saturday. (Bembe is a type of drumming that originated in West Africa.)

In a review of the album in All About Jazz, Jack Bowers wrote, “Debriano has absorbed the celebratory nature of the music and written ten songs that give bright voice to bembe’s rhythmic and harmonic temper.”

Tickets are $30, $25 for members.

Center Stage, the arts center’s resident theater company, will hold open auditions for a staged reading of Truman Capote’s holiday short stories on Sunday at noon. Auditions will begin promptly; late arrivals will be seen at the discretion of Michael Disher, the director. There will be readings from the stories; sides will be provided.

The stories are “The Thanksgiving Visitor,” “One Christmas,” and “A Christmas Memory.” Rehearsals will be held this month and in October and November, with performances from Nov. 15 through Nov. 17 and Nov. 29 through Dec. 1.

Clothing and shoes suitable for an audition have been suggested; the actors should have “a flexible schedule.” Most rehearsals are scheduled on Saturdays and Sundays during the day. Casting will be immediate, as rehearsals will begin in about two weeks. More information is available from the director at [email protected].

The Surfrider Foundation of Eastern Long Island Chapter’s 22nd annual Surf Movie Night, a benefit for clean water and healthy beaches, will happen next Thursday at 5:30 p.m. on the arts center’s lawn.

The program will begin with live music by Real East End Brass and will include an online auction. The film screening will begin at dusk. Refreshments will be available from local vendors; guests have been encouraged to take lawn chairs or blankets.

Early-bird tickets are $20; $40 adds a T-shirt. Children 2 to 12 get in for $10. Tickets are available at e.givesmart.com/events/DRs or from the arts center’s website. The rain date is Friday, Sept. 13.

The Sweet Smell of Nostalgia at Sagaponack General

Stepping into the new Sagaponack General Store, which reopened yesterday after being closed since 2020, is a sweet experience, and not just because there’s a soft-serve ice cream station on the left and what promises to be the biggest penny candy selection on the South Fork on your right, but because it’s like seeing an old friend who, after some struggle, made it big. Really, really big.
