Tragedy and Tap
The Met: Live in HD will return to Guild Hall on Saturday at 1 p.m. with Strauss’s “Salome,” the company’s first new production of the work in 20 years.
Adapted from a play by Oscar Wilde, “Salome” depicts the biblical princess who, after being drawn to and rejected by Jochanaan, demands of her stepfather, King Herod, that he be decapitated.
Claus Guth, one of Europe’s leading opera directors, sets the production in the Victorian era. Elza van den Heever, a South African soprano, plays the title role, while Peter Mattei, a Swedish baritone, is Jochanaan. The cast is rounded out by Gerhard Siegel as King Herod, Michelle de Young as his wife, Herodias, and Piotr Buszewski as Narraboth.
Tickets are $30, $27 for members.
On a lighter note, Our Fabulous Variety Show will bring to Guild Hall “Revolution of Rhythm,” a celebration of the history and future of tap dancing, next Thursday at 7 p.m. The show illuminates the history of tap as an African-American art form whose roots are shared with step, jazz, hip-hop, and swing dance styles.
Tickets range from $10 to $40. On the day of the performance, walk-ups will be admitted free, first come first served, unless the show has sold out.
Bingo and Vinyl
LTV Studios will pivot this weekend from Drag Bingo, a presentation of Our Fabulous Variety Show, to the first annual Hamptons Vinyl Record Fair.
Hosted by RaffaShow, Julia Van Cartier, and Miss Nina, OFVS’s drag queens, bingo will share the limelight with pop-up drag performances on Friday from 6 to 8:30 p.m.
Tickets are $25, $30 at the door, and include three bingo cards; additional cards can be bought throughout the evening. Cabaret tables that seat four are $175 ($200 at the door), and include premium seating; a bottle of wine or Prosecco or four cans of beer; six total bingo cards, and four bingo daubers.
The record fair will happen on Sunday from noon to 6. Music lovers, vinyl enthusiasts, and collectors can enjoy rare vinyl offerings, D.J. sets, and live performances. Food trucks and other vendors will be on hand.
General admission is $10. Vendor tables are $50, $75, and $100. More details, including rules, are at ltveh.org.
