“Smorgasbord” at Firestone
“Smorgasbord,” a show of work by more than 20 artists that celebrates variety and difference, both within the individual artworks and in the show at large, is on view at Eric Firestone Gallery in East Hampton through June 22.
The artists in this cross-generational exhibition, according to the gallery, are unafraid to mix and collide referents, mediums, materials, inspirations, and motifs, creating densely layered artworks reflecting a diversity of experiences.
The show includes sculpture, abstract and figurative painting, ceramics, fiber work, and multimedia pieces.
John Torreano’s Galaxies
“John Torreano: Walks Through the Veil Nebula,” on view at the Drawing Room in East Hampton from Saturday through July 7, features recent paintings and watercolors inspired by the galaxies and informed by the artist’s ongoing exploration of illusion, perception, and the metaphysical potential of his materials.
The exhibition’s title refers to Mr. Torreano’s investigations of the Veil Nebula, the visible remains of a massive star that exploded thousands of years ago. Studying views of this network of glowing gas and dust captured in satellite images, he transforms the kaleidoscopic structures into flickering abstractions in sketchbook studies, watercolors, and large paintings.
The show also includes a selection of prismatic glass sculpture created by Mr. Torreano in collaboration with the Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, Wash.
Leiber Collection Reopens
The Leiber Collection in Springs will reopen Saturday with “Celebration! 20 Years of Art, Fashion, and the Garden,” featuring the works of Judith and Gerson Leiber in the museum and a show of works by East End artists in the garden. A reception is set for 2 to 5 p.m.
The “2025 Garden of Friends” artists are Monica Banks, Scott Bluedorn, Perry Burns, Philippe Cheng, Jeremy Dennis, Sabra Moon Elliot, Saskia Friedrich, Jeremy Grosvenor, Mary Heilmann, Laurie Lambrecht, Jill Musnicki, Toni Ross and Brianna Ashe, Bastienne Schmidt, Yung Jake, and Almond Zigmund.
For Gene Samuelson
Gene Samuelson, who died in February, was a longtime resident of Amagansett and a co-founder, with Frank Sofo, of the Wednesday Group, a coterie of plein-air painters. That group has grown over the years to more than 30 artists who meet weekly to paint and draw in outdoor settings.
The Samuelson family and the Wednesday Group have teamed up to host a celebration of the artist’s life and art. The event will happen at Ashawagh Hall in Springs on June 7 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. A reception will follow at 4, and the exhibition of work by Samuelson and other members of the Wednesday Group will be on view June 7 and June 8 from 10 to 5.
