The East Hampton School District on Tuesday began offering free breakfasts and lunches to all students as part of a state-funded program intended to relieve the stresses of Covid-19 on families. The program will run through June 30.

"It's at no cost to the district," said Melissa Curran, the school's food service manager with Whitsons, which runs East Hampton's food programs as well as others UpIsland. "We're being reimbursed" a per-meal rate from the state, she said.

The program saves students between $2.85 and $4.10 per meal on their food accounts, though they will still need to pay for any snacks and a la carte items. "There will be no more tracking through lunch cards, so the lines will go a lot quicker," Ms. Curran said.
