Guild Hall has named the high school competition winners of its annual student art show, which this year had a theme — “made by water” — for the first time.
Kara Rhoads, a Pierson High School sophomore, earned the best painting award. For her acrylic-on-wood representation of a whale, Asha Hokanson, an East Hampton High School junior, earned an award for best representational painting. The award for best abstract painting went to Lilah Moon Yektai, a Ross School junior, for an encaustic crayon work titled “Turbulence.”
The award for best collaboration went to an acrylic-on-cardboard painting, “Tide Movement,” by a group of East Hampton High School students from grades 9 to 12: Claire McGovern, Elmer A. Perez Sarpec, Aviv Modek, James Amaden, Grace Hosey, Arabella Kuplins, Leonella Abreu Garcia, Jocelyn Jarro, Carline Disunno, Akaelianna Gilbert, and Anais Marin.
Andy Ngo, an East Hampton senior, won best work on paper for his mixed-media “Contrasts.” Emily Kennedy’s “Sea of Shapes” was the best drawing; she is an East Hampton freshman. In the mixed-media category, Johanna De Paula Fructuoso, an East Hampton sophomore, and Emilia Baltz, a Pierson junior, shared the top award. Johanna’s work was an untitled abstract collage, and Emilia’s was a mixed-media work on canvas, “A Question of Time.”
Chris Niola Pantosin, an East Hampton senior, won for best sculpture for a ceramic piece called “Main Beach.” Another East Hampton senior, Orion Gianis, won a best mood award for his oil pastel work, “Gardiners Sky.”
Ryan Jiang of the Ross School won best digital illustration for “Light the Way.” Best digital print went to Lily Valleau-Lowney, an East Hampton junior, for a photo of two fishermen working in the surf. Armani Gordon’s “Minority Surfer” won best photograph portrait. It was completed in the 12th-grade Advanced Placement art and design course at East Hampton. Lilia Schaefer, an East Hampton junior, earned an honorable mention for her pastel work titled “Window.”
The awards were judged by Virva Hinnemo, an artist and art teacher who lives in Springs.
