On a sunny, autumn day, the Springs School art club visited the studio of the artist Hiroyuki Hamada in East Hampton, where they learned about the process artists go through from the first line of a pencil to the last touch of color on their pieces of art and had the chance to see Mr. Hamada’s sculptures.

Mr. Hamada said that his art teacher had inspired him to become an artist. The Springs art teachers Morgan Bock and Laura Marino came up with the idea of the studio visit with the Parrish Art Museum because they wanted students to explore art and meet working artists. “I think the art field trip was amazing because I got to meet an artist and we got to see his sculptures,” said Britney Pesantez, a sixth grader. “His sculptures were amazing. It inspired me because he used simple lines and shapes to create breathtaking sculptures.”

Last week, the Springs School PTA organized a Scholastic Book Fair and the students loved it. All of the kids had a chance to buy books, and PTA parent volunteers said that they were happy to volunteer because it’s thrilling to see kids get excited about books. They also appreciate when the community spends money at the book fair because the money goes back to the school. Maria Lojano, a sixth grader, said that she enjoys getting books and having the opportunity to read more. Brynn Decker, another sixth grader, appreciates that there are lots of genres to choose from.
