The timeline of Montauk Brewing Co.’s ascent in the world of beer started in Vaughan Cutillo’s basement in 2012, continued with its barn-style brick-and-mortar space in 2013, and arrived at the New York Mets’ home, Citi Field, in 2015. The year 2022 saw Tilray, a Canadian company specializing in products in the cannabis and wellness beverage markets, acquire the popular beer brand and elevate it on an international level.

How much higher can Montauk Brewing Co. ascend, one might ask? The answer: 30,000 feet.

JetBlue Airlines and Tilray Brands Inc. announced on Feb. 5 that the brewery’s products will now be served on all of JetBlue’s domestic and international flights. JetBlue travelers can now order Surf Beer Golden Ale from a menu that already included well-established brands like Bud Light and Sam Adams.

“We are proud and excited that JetBlue selected our Montauk Surf Beer Golden Ale to offer to travelers worldwide,” Mr. Cutillo said in a statement. “This selection represents not just a beverage, but the embodiment of relaxation and joy that Montauk Brewing stands for. We hope that every sip taken at 30,000 feet connects our consumers to the carefree spirit of Montauk and the adventurous journey ahead.”

Montauk’s Surf Beer variety, one of its top sellers, is a light golden ale with a reputation for a crisp and refreshing feel. According to its tasting notes, it’s fairly low on the hops intensity scale and bears similarities to popular Mexican-style lagers. It is said to pair well with peppery cheeses like Monterey Jack — which happens to be available, too, in some of the airline’s snack box options, according to JetBlue’s current in-flight hospitality menu.

JetBlue is the first airline to serve Montauk Brewing Co. products, Tilray announced. Surf Beer Golden Ale typically retails for $13.99 for a six-pack; JetBlue will charge $10 per can.
