Southampton Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman extended emergency orders closing the town's beaches to out-of-towners and restricting parking in beach lots and nearby roads through June 5.

An earlier order restricted Southampton's beach parking lots to residents and renters only. A second directive limits use of the beaches even where parking is not restricted to all town roads "within 1,000 feet of a road-end directly leading to a public beach or water body." The new rules are in response to hundreds of cars over Memorial Day weekend that were left along roads where there were no signs prohibiting parking.

Cars parked along those roads will now be required to display a Southampton Town beach parking permit. In the event of beach overcrowding, people arriving or already on the sand may be asked to show proof of residency or a rental in the town, such as a driver's license, car registration, utility bill, or lease.

The emergency order is limited by law to five days but will likely be renewed, according to the supervisor's office. Violators will be asked to leave, cars without stickers will be ticketed, and cars parked overnight could be towed.
