Wed, 07/26/2023 - 09:28
Marine Lance Cpl. Jordan C. Haerter was killed in Iraq in 2008.

Jordan's Run, a 5K run and walk through the village and along the water in commemoration of Marine Lance Cpl. Jordan C. Haerter, who was killed in action in Iraq in 2008 at the age of 19, is set for Sunday morning.

Registration is at 7, followed at 8 by the always-moving opening ceremony, featuring tributes from veterans describing Corporal Haerter's heroism in the face of a suicide bomber. The race starts at 8:30 at Pierson High School, from which Corporal Haerter graduated.

Registration, at EliteFeats.com, costs $30, or $35 on the day of the race. Those under 12 can take part for free. There will be music, T-shirts, a photo booth, and bagels and water. Registration packets can be picked up early on Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Pierson.

Proceeds go to In Jordan's Honor, a nonprofit that among other things funds a scholarship for graduating Pierson students entering the military or law enforcement.

Item of the Week: Untitled, by Mary Nimmo Moran, 1881

The Mary Nimmo Moran etching seen here features a type of landscape often depicted in her work: sand dunes in the foreground with detailed trees and in back a windmill, maybe the Gardiner Mill, which she would have been able to see near her rental property.
