American Legion Post 419 in Amagansett has put out a call for support. On Nov. 23, the American Legion will host a Bonac clam chowder dinner from 4 to 8 p.m., with proceeds going to two veterans in need who have been out of work because of serious injuries.

“We have in our organization what we call a benevolent fund,” Fred Overton, the legion’s financial officer, said. “We have fund-raisers and put it in an account, so that when a veteran needs help with groceries or fuel oil, we can help them, and their families as well.”

“We don’t have a lot of money but we do what we can,” he said. “We need a bit more help.”

A donation of $25 gets you a bowl of clam chowder, salad, and dessert. There will be a cash bar. “People can buy tickets by calling the legion or coming in anytime after 3.”

Space is limited. “I can only cook so much chowder,” Mr. Overton said.

Rowdy Hall (the House) Is on a Roll

Long before the name “Rowdy Hall” was adopted by a popular East Hampton Village bar and eatery (now in Amagansett), it was a boarding house: Mrs. Harry Hamlin’s Rowdy Hall. The building, now a single-family house, still stands at 111 Egypt Lane, although currently it’s floating, suspended six feet above a hole. When it’s lowered again, it will be on a new foundation.
