The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation has two seal hikes and a nighttime owl hike on the agenda in Montauk in the coming days.

On the seal outings, Saturday and Sunday at 10 a.m., hikers could see up to five different species of seals, along with winter birds. The cost is $4, cash only, and children 3 and under can come along for free. Registration and more information are available through Montauk Downs at 631-668-5000.

A state park naturalist will lead a walk through the woods at Camp Hero State Park to listen for owls on Friday, Jan. 31, from 5 to 7 p.m. The meeting place will be the Camp Hero west gate on Camp Hero Road. Registration is by searching “Montauk owl hikes” at Eventbrite.com. Dogs will not be allowed. The cost is also $4.

The next owl hike will be on Feb. 14.

Rowdy Hall (the House) Is on a Roll

Long before the name “Rowdy Hall” was adopted by a popular East Hampton Village bar and eatery (now in Amagansett), it was a boarding house: Mrs. Harry Hamlin’s Rowdy Hall. The building, now a single-family house, still stands at 111 Egypt Lane, although currently it’s floating, suspended six feet above a hole. When it’s lowered again, it will be on a new foundation.
