Sunday, Sept. 15, was the last day of lifeguard services at East Hampton Town beaches. I went to Ditch Plain Beach, where the lifeguard team led by Glen Baietti was working. The town is fortunate to have people of such dedication and commitment working on our beaches.

Thank you for the “Guestwords” on box turtles. Box turtles inhabit my property on the northwest corner of the intersection of Wainscott Hollow Road and Wainscott Main Street. I have encountered three so far this year including the one that came by today. They range from eight inches to two feet.

This past weekend I rediscovered that it can actually be fun, relaxing, and a friendly experience when an East End town is crowded with vacationers.
On Saturday, I visited Westhampton Beach. I was thrilled to find that it hasn’t changed much since I was a kid 60-plus years ago. I easily parked my car without its being immediately marked as a potential violator of time limitations as would have happened in East Hampton Village.

Word has come to Santa Fe about a precious purple pearl that was discovered housed in a clam in Bonac. I suspect the price of a clamming license has skyrocketed as a consequence. I’ll be inspecting my clams more carefully.
I’m considering quitting my day job as a contractor and investing in the newfound discovery. Say, how much is a clam rake nowadays? This could turn into wall-to-wall clammers.

As the traffic thickened this past week it seemed like the normal rhythm of an East Hampton summer starting. However I sense something more pernicious in the air. The first hint was evident when I slowed down near Red Horse on Friday to let some poor soul make a left turn and suddenly I was barraged by a horn blaring from a car which went to my right to pass and came within inches of smashing into said poor soul. And they were mad? Shrugging, I looked at my wife and said “summer is here.”

Dear Mr. Rattray,
What a delightful and unexpected surprise I had when I went to the Town Hall to renew my dump sticker and was met by several beautiful big photographs of the sea by the artist Jane Martin. I felt transformed. What a pleasant way to wait in line to get a permit, and I couldn’t help but make the connection that recycling, which goes on at the dump, helps keep the ocean beautiful and clean, as shown in the photographs. And I applaud the town for mounting such a beautiful exhibit in this public building.
At Its Best Amagansett May 6, 2019Dear David,It was East Hampton at its best on Saturday night at the Neighborhood House where the community came together to celebrate Cinquo de Mayo. This was the second annual fest, hosted and organized by the East Hampton Democratic Committee for the benefit of Project Most.And what a celebration it was: A full house, toddlers to seniors, from every neighborhood in town. Games for the children, including an Easter egg hunt (which had been rained out) and prizes galore.

Rabbi Joshua Franklin and Cantor Debra Stein did a most excellent job! I don’t recall ever being so entertained at a religious ceremony.Debra’s outfits were dazzling, while the rabbi (also adorned in garments of splendor) made the evening festive.
Should Not Rush Spring April 15, 2019Dear David,Thank you for your editorial on why the East Hampton Town Trustees should not rush the adoption of the currently proposed 35-year leases. It is true that the current lease terms need revision. And, there are residents who have lived at Lazy Point for many years who need to be protected with low-priced leases for as long as they wish to stay.
