Elizabeth Regan, 88

Thu, 07/09/2020 - 13:06

Elizabeth Regan, a dedicated homemaker, mother, wife, and community member, died at her home in Mamaroneck, N.Y., on June 23. A longtime year-round resident of East Hampton who, with her husband, kept the Mamaroneck apartment to visit relatives nearby, she was 88.

Born on Feb. 3, 1932, Mrs. Regan grew up in Adrigole, County Cork, Ireland, with her parents, Michael Corkery and the former Mary Harrington, and her grandparents, John and Elizabeth Corkery.

She eventually immigrated to New York, and on Sept. 21, 1958, married Michael Regan, whom she had met at an Irish dance in the city. Together, they were part of their Riverdale parish for over 30 years as active participants in the religious life of St. Margaret of Cortona Church and School, as well as in civic and community life.

Mrs. Regan, also a dedicated volunteer for Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church here, was known for her strength and love for her family, who said she was the center of their lives. She enjoyed walks on the beach and the greenery of East Hampton, which reminded her of her home in Ireland.

"Her beautiful smile, wavy silver hair, wonderful sense of humor, sweet brogue, and her love of cooking will always remain in our hearts," the family wrote.

Mr. Regan survives, as do their children. They are Mary Regan of East Hampton, Kathleen Regan of Amagansett and Brooklyn Heights, Finbar Regan of Larchmont, N.Y., and Eileen Regan of Westport, Conn. She also leaves eight grandchildren.

Services were held at Saints John and Paul Parish in Mamaroneck on Friday, with burial at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, N.Y. The family has suggested memorial contributions to the Graymoor Monastery, 1350 Route 9, Garrison, N.Y. 10524, run by Catholic friars engaged in a healing ministry, or to the cardiac unit at New York-Presbyterian Medical Center, 180 Fort Washington Avenue, N.Y. 10032, which cared for her for many years.

The Swan Lady’s Spirit Endures

From the late 1980s until the early 2000s, it would not have been unusual to see Sigrid Owen near Fort Pond or Hook Pond — large net or perhaps a bag of cracked corn in hand — on a mission. Ms. Owen, who would have been 98 on Feb. 7, died on May 23 of last year.

Time for the Great Backyard Bird Count!

The ground will be covered in white for this year’s Great Backyard Bird Count, which starts Friday and lasts through Sunday, and that means feeders could be especially active and potentially yield some surprises.
