Barbara Goldsmith, a prolific writer whose books included the 1980 bestseller “Little Gloria . . . Happy at Last” and who was a founding editor of New York magazine, died on June 26 at her New York City home.

Mark S. Handler, a former president and chief operating officer of Macy’s who was instrumental in its transformation from a bargain-hunter’s destination to a fashion emporium, died at his East Hampton house on July 16.

Priscilla Bowden Potter, whose paintings captured the beauty and light of the East End, died in New York City after a brief illness on July 19.

Robert Barron, a drummer who in the 1940s toured with big bands and played with the likes of Teddy Wilson, Leslie Gart, and Lani McIntyre, died on July 12 at home in Amagansett.

Stewart Pearce, who had a 40-year career with the Metropolitan Opera in Lincoln Center, died at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan on July 17 with his husband, Kevin Kellogg, at his side.

A graveside service for Joseph H. Mintzer, a longtime resident of East Hampton, will be held on Thursday at Cedar Lawn Cemetery in East Hampton. Mr. Mintzer, who was 93, died in his sleep on Friday. A full obituary will appear in a future issue of The Star. 

A celebration of the life of Catherine Gagliotti, who died on Jan. 5 at the age of 79, will be held on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Indian Wells Beach in Amagansett.

Visiting hours for James Justice Judge, who lived in East Hampton for many years, will be held today from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Charles J. O’Shea Funeral Home in Wantagh.

Henry Griffith Parker III, a summer visitor to Amagansett for than 50 years, died on July 9 at Morristown Memorial Hospital in New Jersey. He was 89 and had lived in Madison, N.J.

Joseph Anton Hren Jr., who owned and ran Jos. A. Hren Nurseries in Amagansett, the family business, for 52 years, died on July 6 at the Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown, N.Y., of renal failure.

Joy Evyonne Mayfield, a strong advocate for education and lifelong learning, practiced what she preached through constant reading and travels to India, Europe, Madagascar, and Borneo. A South Fork resident for over 40 years, she died on July 11 at the Hebrew Ho

Word has been received of the death of Lindsay Ann Forde, who grew up in East Hampton, in Austin, Tex., on June 27. Her sister, Angela Morrison, said she had been on medication and died following a seizure.

Lucille F. McMahon, a lifelong Sag Harbor resident known for tending particularly lovely gardens, died in her sleep at home on July 5.

A memorial service is to be announced for Priscilla Bowden Potter of East Hampton and Manhattan, who died on Tuesday morning in New York City.

Elizabeth I. Carroll of Montauk, 92, died at the Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead on July 12.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, at the Yardley and Pino Funeral Home in Sag Harbor for Kenneth Johnson of Bridgehampton, who died yesterday at the age of 57.

Marjorie Louise Klingler Jenkins, who was born in Southampton and grew up mainly in Sag Harbor, died on June 30 at the Waterview Hills Nursing Center in Purdys, N.Y.

A wake for Joseph Hren Jr. will be held at Yardley and Pino Funeral Home in East Hampton on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and from 7 to 9 p.m., with a fireman's service scheduled for 7 p.m. that day. A funeral is planned for Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Amagansett, and burial will be at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery in East Hampton.

Mr. Hren, a longtime resident of East Hampton and member of the Amagansett Fire Department for many years, died on July 6 in Cooperstown, N.Y. 

Alison R. Bernstein, a higher education pioneer who had been a vice president for knowledge, creativity, and freedom at the Ford Foundation, died at home in East Hampton last Thursday, in the company of her dog as well as friends, her partner, and her daughters.

Barbara Ann Miller, who had run Barbara Miller Studios, a drapery and slipcover business in East Hampton, died last Thursday at Stony Brook University Hospital after a stroke, her family said.

Dr. Jerome L. Schulman, a professor emeritus at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan and a pioneering virologist in influenza research, died at his New York City home last Thursday at the age of 89.

Renata Dobryn, a potter and freelance carpenter who was born in Argentina and lived in Montauk for the last 30 years, died on June 13 at Stony Brook University Hospital following complications from heart surgery.

Silvia Tennenbaum, a novelist, occasional journalist, active member of the East Hampton Democratic Party, and a fixture of The Star’s letters pages who lived in Springs for many years, died on June 27 at Bryn Mawr Hospital in Pennsylvania after a brief illness.

A graveside memorial service for Stephen A. Steele Sr., an East Hampton native who died on March 30 at Sentara Obici Hospital in Suffolk, Va., will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church’s cemetery on Cedar Street in East Hampton.

Ellen G. Fine, who after a successful career at Bloomingdale’s developed nine home furnishings and women’s clothing stores called Fine Design, one of which was on Newtown Lane in East Hampton, died unexpectedly of an aortic dissection on June 7 at her Manhattan office.

A memorial service will be held tomorrow for Alton Terry Gholson, who died on May 31 at the age of 61 in Las Vegas, where he had lived for the past 13 years.

Marie Judith Fenley Esposito of Montauk, who was introduced to the hamlet as a teenager in 1955 when her grandfather built a house on East Lake Drive, died on June 21.

Raymond John Warme of Montauk, a retired construction contractor, died at Stony Brook Hospital on June 26 of complications following surgery.

Susan W. Duke, who grew up in Laredo, Tex., and moved north with her husband to live in Noyac and Sag Harbor for 31 years, died Monday at the Kanas Center for Hospice Care in Quogue.

A wake for Marie Fenley Esposito, 76, of Montauk will be held at the Yardley and Pino Funeral Home in East Hampton on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral Mass will be said on Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Therese of Lisieux Catholic Church in Montauk. Mrs. Esposito died on Tuesday at the St. James Rehabilitation Center. A full obituary will appear in a future issue.
