Cocaine Charge After Stop

Thu, 05/23/2019 - 06:33

An East Hampton native with a Florida address was arrested Saturday evening on charges he had cocaine ready for sale.

Aaron K. Petty, 27, was pulled over on Floyd Street in East Hampton at about 5:20 p.m. for failure to yield, and the officer who stopped him reported a strong odor of marijuana coming from within his 2007 BMW. A search of the car allegedly turned up 23 small plastic bags containing a white powdery substance in the glove box, along with an electronic scale. The white powder, with an aggregate weight of one-eighth of an ounce, later tested positive for cocaine, East Hampton Town police reported.

Police also found a partial pill said to be alprazolam (Xanax) in the center console. Later, after Mr. Petty was taken into custody, they found a plastic bag of marijuana between the seats of the squad car, which they said was his.

Mr. Petty, who has been living in North Miami, was charged with criminal possession of narcotics in the fourth degree and criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third degree with intent to sell, both felonies. He faces additional charges, both misdemeanors, of criminal use of drug paraphernalia and criminal possession.

Justice Steven Tekulsky arraigned him on Sunday, setting bail at $10,000 cash or $20,000 bond. Mr. Petty was turned over to the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office following arraignment and is being held in Riverside. He is due back in court today.

Volunteers Answer the Call of Duty

“No one wants to get out of bed, having just climbed in. And it’s a really cold night, and it’s windy, and everything else — but you know that everyone else will be feeling the same, and so you go anyway. Everyone jumps in their cars and drives there, and then you deal with whatever is going on.”
