Mushrooms, Pot Brownies

Thu, 05/23/2019 - 07:11

David Farshadfar, 25, of Tenafly, N.J., was arrested in downtown Montauk early Sunday morning on misdemeanor drug possession charges, after East Hampton Town police allegedly found him in possession of a quantity of hallucinogenic mushrooms. He also had two brownies containing marijuana, according to police, which brought a less serious charge of possession of pot.

He was quite talkative during his arraignment later that morning. “I’m not sure what I’m going to do now,” he told Justice Lisa R. Rana. “I’m not sure if I’m going home.” His parents, who had driven from Tenafly when informed of his arrest, were seated in the courtroom.

Justice Rana asked the defendant what he was doing in East Hampton. “My uncle used to live here. I’m trying to rehash some of my past and see where it takes me.” She responded that it did not appear his search had taken him anyplace good.

When it came time to set bail, Mr. Farshadfar’s mother spoke to the court. “He’s a fireman and has never been in any trouble like this before,” she said. “He’s been an honor student,” she added.

“I have honor students in here who are O.D.’ing on heroin,” Justice Rana replied. She set bail at $500, which was posted.

A mother-son relationship gone wrong has had a Sag Harbor man in county jail since his arraignment Sunday. Michael Rosado, 51, who allegedly tried to choke his mother at her Main Street residence Saturday night, was charged with criminal contempt for violating the order of protection she held against him. Because violence was said to be involved, the charge is at the felony level.

He told Justice Rana he had just returned from Florida and had been staying with his mother. Unable to meet bail of $1,000, he was remanded to jail. He will be released tomorrow if a grand jury has not handed down an indictment against him.

911 Switch Is Delayed

When contract negotiations for 911 dispatching broke down between East Hampton Town and Village last spring, it became clear that the East Hampton Town Police Department would begin taking the bulk of 911 calls in the township from the village. The turnover was to occur on Jan. 1, but it has now been delayed for at least a month.
