One Mack Truck, 2 Wrecks

Thu, 05/23/2019 - 07:22

A 2007 Mack truck owned by Mickey’s Carting was involved in two accidents within five days here last week, one of which resulted in its driver being taken to Southampton Hospital.

Henry R. Sanchez, 41, of East Hampton was headed south on Red Dirt Road in Springs on the afternoon of March 10 when he drove off the road, striking a bank of hardened snow. He lost control of the truck, town police said, plowing farther off the road. The truck flipped over onto its side and came to a stop against some trees. Mr. Sanchez, conscious but complaining of back pain, was taken to the hospital.

Police attributed the accident to driver inattention and slippery road conditions. The truck had extensive damage to its passenger side, according to the police report, and was towed away by Mickey’s.

But the damage was apparently not severe enough to keep the truck off the road for long. On Saturday just before noon a 2007 Mack truck with the same license plate number, now driven by German E. Bulovar, 50, of Montauk, rear-ended a 2014 Chevrolet van on the eastbound side of Montauk Highway in East Hampton. The van, being driven by Henry E. Valdivieso Silva, 41, of Silver Spring, Md., had stopped suddenly because a white pickup truck had exited the small strip mall there, right in his path.

Mr. Bulovar told police he applied the breaks and tried to steer into the turning lane to the left but could not avoid the van. Police blamed slippery road conditions for the accident. No one was hurt. This time, the truck was towed by Emergency Mechanical Services of East Hampton.

E.M.T. Room Dedicated to Randy Hoffman

A plaque installed outside Stony Brook Southampton Hospital’s Emergency Medical Technician room last week officially dedicates the space to the late Randy Hoffman of East Hampton, a critical-care E.M.T. who worked with fire and ambulance departments across the South Fork and was credited with saving at least two lives during his long tenure as a first responder.

They Know When You've Been Bad or Good

East Hampton Village is now home to 14 Flock license plate reader surveillance cameras, which amounts to one for every 108 full-time residents, if you go by the 2020 census data. They're heralded by local police for aiding in enforcement and investigations, but they use a technology that has proven controversial nationally with those concerned about civil liberties.
