Pointing a Long Gun

Thu, 05/23/2019 - 06:26

An East Hampton man was charged with menacing on April 10 after allegedly pointing a gun at a man who had been living at the same address on Cliff Drive in Bay Point, Noyac.

Southampton Town Police Lt. Susan Ralph said Cameron Cassidy, 24, who gave an East Hampton address as well, pointed a long gun at the victim, who told police he was trying to retrieve his belongings from the house. Sag Harbor Village police assisted town police with the call for help at about 4:20 p.m. When a village officer arrived he found the victim, whose name has not been released, standing in front of the residence.

The case was turned over to town police, who charged Mr. Cassidy with second-degree menacing, a misdemeanor. Bail information was not immediately available.

Also on April 10, East Hampton Town police charged Marco Penafiel Japa, 26, of Hampton Bays with false personation and driving with a suspended license. Mr. Japa was at the wheel of a 2016 Ford F-250 pickup truck on Spring Close Highway in East Hampton at about 11 a.m. when police pulled the truck over. He reportedly gave the officer his name, but tried to conceal his identity by giving a false birth date, even after being warned it was illegal to do so. The officer, who was able to identify him through his Ecuadorean passport, found that his license had been suspended several times, including twice in Nassau County for failure to pay fines for traffic and parking violations.

It was also suspended in July 2010 in the Village of Patchogue, again for failing to pay parking tickets, and three times in June 2017 in Southampton Town, for failure to answer a summons.

In addition to the charge of false personation, Mr. Japa faces a misdemeanor count of aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle with three or more suspensions. He was released after posting $250 bail and is due in East Hampton Town Justice Court on May 2.

Volunteers Answer the Call of Duty

“No one wants to get out of bed, having just climbed in. And it’s a really cold night, and it’s windy, and everything else — but you know that everyone else will be feeling the same, and so you go anyway. Everyone jumps in their cars and drives there, and then you deal with whatever is going on.”
