Amagansett

A 2009 Nissan parked in the lot north of Amagansett Main Street was vandalized by someone using a sharp instrument, possibly a key, overnight on Jan. 19. Two phrases in Spanish were scratched on the vehicle, which belongs Jorge Paucarpauta. He had loaned the car to a friend for the day, he told police.

East Hampton Village

Police and the East Hampton Fire Department were called to Georgica Beach on the evening of Feb. 1, where they found and extinguished a fire. The fuel for the fire was old beach fencing. A witness said he had seen some people standing around the fire earlier.

A Springs woman who dropped off her car at the Exxon station to be inspected on Feb. 2 told police a four-inch crack in her windshield had occurred while the car was there. The manager of the station disputed the claim, saying the crack was there when the car was brought in and he had noticed it when he put a sticker on. Police told the two it was a civil matter.

A 79-year-old Mill Hill Lane woman told police that she received a call from a woman claiming to be with the Internal Revenue Service, who told her she owed $6,390 in back taxes, and would be arrested if she did not wire the money immediately. She had heard of such scams, she said, and knew better.

On Friday morning, as the snow began falling harder, it was discovered that three large trees had been cut down along the Nature Trail near Huntting Lane. Debris was scattered about, police said. An arborist inspected the stumps and said the cuts had occurred within the last few days.

Montauk

A United States Postal Service employee contacted police Saturday to report that the mailbox on the south side of Montauk Highway at Carl Fisher Plaza had been damaged at some point since the beginning of the year. Marge Winski estimated the cost of repair at about $100. Police said there were scratches and dents above the lower interior door on the box.

Northwest Woods

A would-be burglar attempted to enter a Montauk Avenue house during the overnight hours of Jan. 24. Catherine Trembley called police when she found her rear slider door slightly ajar and off its track. The individual apparently gave up, as tracks led away from the house in the snow. There was no sign of actual entry.
