Amagansett

A neighbor noticed a door ajar at an apparently unoccupied Town Lane residence on Saturday and called police. It appeared that the door had been forced open, with a lower panel damaged as well as the jamb and knob, though nothing inside was disturbed. The owner was notified, as were detectives.

Peggy DiSunno, a Robins Way resident, told police on Sunday that her mailbox had been vandalized the night before. Replacing it will cost about $200.

East Hampton Village

Police have handed out several warnings and summonses this month to contractors and real estate brokers who placed signs on public property. Carlos Serna, a contractor, was given a warning March 1 for a sign illegally placed on Toilsome Lane. On Friday, WMD Plumbing and Heating was warned about a sign on Montauk Highway in the village. Saunders Real Estate was warned Saturday about two signs, one at the intersection of Montauk Highway and Baiting Hollow Road, the other at Baiting Hollow Road and Carriage Court. An unnamed real estate company was ticketed Saturday for a sign on Toilsome Lane.

Springs

Kenneth Davis of Gerard Drive returned to his house on Feb. 23 after a six-month absence and discovered the license plates missing from his 1994 BMW.

Ann Peters, a Renee’s Way resident, called police after returning home on Feb. 24 after being away for a week. An Andersen sliding door had pry marks and chipped paint, apparently caused by someone trying, but failing, to break in. The house was not entered.

Long Days on the Fire Line In Orange County

East Hampton and Amagansett firefighters volunteered to head north last week to help fight a 5,000-acre wildfire in Orange County, N.Y., not once but twice, battling unfamiliar terrain to do so. “They fight fires completely differently than we do when we have a brush fire,” the Amagansett chief said.
