East Hampton Village

A woman driving on Main Street the morning of April 22 called police after a pedestrian crossing the street smacked the rear of her car with her pocketbook. The pedestrian was not in a crosswalk at the time, the driver said. According to the report, after the two “exchanged words,” they “calmed down and went their separate ways.”

On April 21, an unhappy patron who had arrived a few minutes after closing time at the Chase Bank began “banging and kicking on the door,” and the bank manager reported that the man seemed drunk. A police check of the area did not locate the angry man.

Police were called to the second fairway of the Maidstone Club golf course, off Further Lane, on the morning of April 21. Some trees near the property line had been cut down by “an unknown subject” over the previous weekend.

A house at 117 Buell Lane, which is slated for demolition, has apparently been used by squatters, who severely vandalized it. Police found graffiti on the walls, and the toilet and stove were destroyed. Heavy locks have been added to the doors.

Montauk

An iPad left on an eastbound Hampton Jitney last week was apparently stolen by a rider. Evan Harrel told police last Thursday that on the evening of April 20, he got off the bus in Bridgehampton, leaving the device, which he valued at $400, behind. He called the Jitney twice over the next two days to no avail. Then, last Thursday, he found an email on his iCloud account telling him that the iPad had been activated at or near the Omni headquarters of the Jitney, and then again at a Southampton address. Police are investigating.

Napeague

An officer with the Department of Environmental Conservation called police on April 13 to an abandoned radio building off Napeague Meadow Road, where a vandal had thrown white paint onto a wetlands sign. The officer, who is with the marine habitat protection unit, also wanted extensive graffiti on the building documented.

Springs

A Crandall Street man called police last Thursday evening after discovering that his double plate-glass door pane had been shattered, apparently by a stone from his driveway. Jhony Nieto estimated the damage at about $800.

Money left in an unlocked car on Bayview Avenue, two blocks from Crandall Street, was stolen overnight on April 20. Monaca Avila told police she found her wallet, which had been in the center console, the next morning, minus the $550 she had left in it.

The night before, the rear passenger window of a car parked on Crystal Drive was shattered and the car’s contents gone through. Milton Rea told police that whoever did it was likely looking for cash, as he had had $300 stolen from the car on a previous occasion.

Wainscott

Trespassers entered his Daniel’s Hole Road house on Sunday evening, a 17-year-old who lives there with his parents told police. The family had left the house for about an hour, the teenager reported, and found when they returned that part of the hot tub cover had been removed. There was no other damage and nothing was taken. Police checked around the house but could not find any footprints.

Long Days on the Fire Line In Orange County

East Hampton and Amagansett firefighters volunteered to head north last week to help fight a 5,000-acre wildfire in Orange County, N.Y., not once but twice, battling unfamiliar terrain to do so. “They fight fires completely differently than we do when we have a brush fire,” the Amagansett chief said.

Awards for Good Policing in Handgun Scuffle

“It could have gone worse. We’re lucky that I have officers here that weren’t shot,” said Police Chief Jeff Erickson at Friday’s East Hampton Village Board meeting. Chief Erickson was recognizing Sgt. Wayne Gauger and Officers John Clark and Robbie Greene for a traffic stop on Aug. 31 that turned into a scuffle and the eventual confiscation of an illegal gun.
