Stephen Smith said he made contact with “Pleasant Classic Home” on craigslist on Aug. 2 to rent the house from Aug. 22 to Sunday for $3,100. He exchanged emails with someone claiming to be the owner and a contract was emailed to him to send in with a check via FedEx. When he showed up at the house on Aug. 22, its owner said she not only had not rented it to him but did not have it listed on craigslist, but on VRBO. East HamptonSomeone damaged a mailbox on Maple Lane on Aug. 25 or 26. Gerald Tobias told police he did not wish to press charges if police found the culprit, but did want to document the incident. He did not believe anything was missing from the box, which he valued at $750.A 2-horsepower motor was swiped from John C. Cameron’s 17-foot sailboat at the East Hampton Town marina at the head of Three Mile Harbor sometime between Aug. 4 and 18. The motor, a 2012 Honda, was attached to the stern of the sailboat, which was docked, bow out, at the north end of the marina up against Hog Creek Road. Mr. Cameron said it would cost $800 to replace. East Hampton Village An unknown man with a handgun in a holster on his hip walked onto a property on Egypt Lane on Aug. 28 at about 1:30 p.m. and asked about work being done on the property. The man, wearing a blue Polo shirt and dress pants, left in a dark midsize sport utility vehicle. Police canvassed the area with no results. Police received a complaint of dirt bikes riding on David’s Lane and Sarah’s Way last Thursday afternoon. A short time later, police saw a boy operating a mini-bike near David’s Lane. An officer contacted the boy’s parent and said the bike must be kept on private property.A Montauk man parked his 1994 BMW in the long-term lot on Lumber Lane before going to work and took a taxi home at the end of his shift Friday morning. When he returned later that afternoon, he told police, he could not find the car. Police found it in the Reutershan lot.An East Hampton man called police claiming a Manhattan man had tripped him on purpose as he jogged by on Pantigo Road Sunday morning at about 11:30. The Manhattan man said the jogger had yelled at him to share the sidewalk “in a nasty manner.” He denied tripping him, but said it was possible he’d tripped on the suitcase he was pulling behind him. MontaukTwo guests at Snug Harbor Motel on Star Island Road told front desk employees that the window in room 33 had been broken on Aug. 18 between 7 and 7:30 p.m. Employees inspected the room and found a lot more damage: a hole in a window next to the front door, a footprint on the door, a hole in the Sheetrock above the couch and two holes in the ceiling above the bed, damage to the headboard, and damage to the wall behind the bed. Lorraine DeRose, the owner, and Matthew Thomas Rizzo, an employee, estimated the damage at nearly $3,000 when they filed a police report the next day.Alim I. Fridie of Bayside told police on July 24 that he wanted to be compensated for time lost from work starting on June 21. He filed a complaint that at about 1 a.m. on June 11, he’d been assaulted at the Point Bar and Grill. Bonnie Brady went to the Montauk precinct last Thursday to report unauthorized charges to her Chase debit card. All the attempted charges were denied. She canceled the card and was issued a new one. Kenneth R. Hejducek left a note on a black Chevrolet sport utility vehicle that was taking up two parking spots at the Harvest on South Emery Street on July 20. When he came out of the restaurant, he told police, all four tires on his BMW had been deflated.
