Sag Grand Larceny Charge

Thu, 05/23/2019 - 06:38

A Greenport man who allegedly diverted funds from a Sag Harbor clothing store where he was working into his own account, was picked up on a warrant Friday morning and charged with grand larceny in the third degree, a felony.

Jesse Elliott, 30, is alleged to have stolen over $3,000 from the unidentified store between July and September 2015. The store did not report the theft until this past June.

Mr. Elliott was arraigned Friday afternoon in Sag Harbor Justice Court and released on his own recognizance. Yesterday, his attorney, Edward Burke Jr., said, “I look forward to representing Jesse. This criminal case is intertwined with a pending civil action between the parties.”

Also last weekend, Sag Harbor Village police charged a resident of Charleston, S.C., with keeping a dog in an overheated car. Jane Lightcap, 58, parked on Main Street Sunday afternoon, leaving the car windows open by about two inches, not enough for the white poodle inside to get air, police said, adding that they found the animal panting, “in the hot and humid conditions.”

Ms. Lightcap was placed under arrest when she returned to the car over a half- hour later. She was released from headquarters with an appearance ticket, and will be arraigned on Sept. 29.

A Sag Harbor man was charged with petty larceny Friday evening after allegedly stealing food that afternoon from the health food store Provisions. Steven J. Peters, 67, while carrying a shopping bag, allegedly filled a basket with two steaks, a package of chicken breasts, two boxes of blackberries, and a package of blueberries before going into the bathroom. When he came out, a manager told police, he was wearing a red baseball cap and sunglasses and carrying only the now-full shopping bag. He left the store without paying.

Using surveillance images from the store, police quickly zeroed in on Mr. Peters, whom they located that evening at a Sag Harbor-Bridgehampton Turnpike address. He was taken to Division Street headquarters, where he was booked and released after giving police $100 bail. He too will be arraigned on Sept. 29.
