The 1 a.m. train from Montauk Monday morning struck a man just east of the Southampton train station, police said.

A Long Island Rail Road train hit a 28-year-old man who may have fallen asleep on the tracks in Southampton Village on Monday, according to police.

The 1 a.m. train from Montauk, due in Babylon at 3:16 a.m., struck the man just east of the Southampton train station. Police said the accident occurred approximately 200 feet west of David White's Lane, between Elm Street and Plant Street, at 1:49 a.m. The train stopped and police and emergency medical responders were called.

"Police found the victim unconscious with both arms severed from his body by the train," a statement from police said.

Southampton Village Volunteer Ambulance treated the man and transported him to a medevac helicopter to be taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was last listed in critical condition, police said. Police did not immediately release his name.

Members of the Metropolitan Trasportation Authority Police also responded to the scene. The accident is still under investigation.

Trains in both directions throughout the morning were delayed as police conducted an investigation.
