Unlucky 13 for Driver

Thu, 05/23/2019 - 06:37

A Huntington man was arrested on Sunday morning for driving while drunk and with a license that had been suspended or revoked 13 times, East Hampton Town police said.

George Mejia, 35, was behind the wheel of a 2003 Honda in Montauk at about 3:45 a.m. According to police, he failed to make a complete stop on South Emery Street, near South Emerson Avenue, and then failed to signal right. Police said he also used his four-way flashers improperly.

Police said he performed poorly on field sobriety tests. Arrested at 4:20 a.m., he was charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, a felony.

Mr. Mejia’s New York State license had been suspended five times on April 29 for failure to answer a summons in the Village of Malverne, as well as eight other times between Oct. 2011 and Sept. 2017.

Justice Steven Tekulsky arraigned him later on Sunday, setting bail at $3,000, which he was unable to make. He was turned over to the Suffolk County sheriff’s office.

Kara R. Grupe, 24, of Oakdale was arrested on a drunken driving charge in Montauk on June 19. Police said she was sitting behind the wheel of a 2009 Volkswagen Jetta on South Etna, near South Edison Street, with the engine running at about 11:50 a.m. They added that she appeared intoxicated and was arrested at 12:08 a.m.

Justice Lisa R. Rana arraigned her later that day, and she was released on her own recognizance.

East Hampton Village police arrested Luke C. Boland, 28, of East Hampton on Saturday after a traffic stop on Route 114, near Buell Lane, at 2:12 a.m. He was pulled over, police said, for failing to use the designated lane of travel and crossing over double-solid yellow lines on Buell Lane in a 2007 Saturn sedan.

Mr. Boland, whose blood alcohol level was reportedly above .18, was charged with aggravated D.W.I., a misdemeanor. He was also ticketed for failure to use a designated lane and driving an uninspected vehicle. He was released on $500 bail.
