Water Training in Action

Thu, 05/23/2019 - 06:33

What started out as a routine winter victim-in-distress Jet Ski training session in Block Island Sound for East Hampton Volunteer Ocean Rescue on Sunday morning ended as an actual rescue of a kite surfer who was being swept away in the white-capped waters, Helene Forst, the squad’s public relations director, reported.

The water was 48 degrees, with a gale warning and periods of heavy rain throughout the day. Swells were three feet west of the Montauk Harbor inlet, Ms. Forst wrote, and wind was out of the northeast at 30 knots. The volunteers were able to rescue the kite surfer and retrieve his kite sail.
