Weekend Crashes Keep Police Busy

Thu, 05/23/2019 - 07:23

The driver of a 2012 Harley Davidson was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital Monday evening after losing control of the motorcycle.

Town Police Capt. Chris Anderson described the incident Tuesday. The cycle was headed west on Route 27 in Montauk, he said, approaching the intersection of South Fox Street near Shadmoor. “A deer ran onto the roadway,” the captain said. “He tried to avoid the animal and lost control.” He was rushed to the East Hampton airport, where a helicopter took him to the hospital. His name has not been released.

A Charlottesville, Va., man was taken to Southampton Hospital on May 20 after his car hit a guardrail about a mile west of the Montauk recycling center. Police said the driver, John Girdler, 73, appeared to be suffering from an illness and “an altered mental state.”

A two-car crash on Friday evening sent one of the drivers to Southampton Hospital. Police said Marco H. Huerta-Farez, 23, was turning right from Buckskill Road onto Cove Hollow Road in East Hampton when his 1992 Nissan collided with a 1970 Ford driven by Paul T. King of East Hampton, 44.

Mr. King, who was treated for pain at the hospital after his Ford bounced off the Nissan and into a tree, told police Mr. Huerta-Farez had failed to yield at a stop sign. Police said Mr. Huerta-Farez was driving with only a learner’s permit.

Correction: The helicopter that transported the motorcyclist to Stony Brook University Hospital landed at East Hampton airport, not Montauk airport as previously reported.

Long Days on the Fire Line In Orange County

East Hampton and Amagansett firefighters volunteered to head north last week to help fight a 5,000-acre wildfire in Orange County, N.Y., not once but twice, battling unfamiliar terrain to do so. “They fight fires completely differently than we do when we have a brush fire,” the Amagansett chief said.
