Underage Drinking: Parents Arrested at House Party

Sat, 12/28/2019 - 17:48

The parents of a 15-year-old were arrested Friday night after East Hampton Village police found teenagers drinking at a house party at 26 The Circle. The house is the same one in which another 15-year-old suffered a drug overdose on Halloween, police said.

Police went to the house at about 9:30 p.m. in response to a noise complaint, and found 30 to 40 teens partying there, both inside the house and out. Officers said they observed the teens "possessing and consuming alcohol."

"The majority of juveniles fled the scene when the police arrived," they said in a statement.

The boy who lives in the house remained there. His parents, Sylvia Flender, 52, and Daniel Meeks, 51, were found in adjoining rooms.

Both parents were charged with unlawfully dealing with a child and violating the Suffolk County Social Host Law, misdemeanors. They were released on their own recognizance and will be arraigned in East Hampton Town Justice Court on Jan. 9.

Police confirmed that the house party was held in the same house where, on Oct. 31, a different 15-year-old was found unconscious following an overdose. The parents were not charged in connection to that incident, but a person whom police said was responsible for supplying the drugs that caused the overdose was arrested days later.

They Know When You've Been Bad or Good

East Hampton Village is now home to 14 Flock license plate reader surveillance cameras, which amounts to one for every 108 full-time residents, if you go by the 2020 census data. They're heralded by local police for aiding in enforcement and investigations, but they use a technology that has proven controversial nationally with those concerned about civil liberties.
