On His Cellphone, He Said

Thu, 08/13/2020 - 10:19

Late Sunday night on Montauk Main Street near the Plaza, Yasir Bari, 35, of Brooklyn, driving a 2016 BMW, rear-ended a parked 2010 Honda belonging to Anthony Morena of Coram. East Hampton Town police said the Honda was pushed onto the grass shoulder and had collided with a bench and metal sign, but that Mr. Bari kept driving until officers stopped him about 800 feet away.

Exiting his vehicle, he was unsteady on his feet, police said, and his speech was slurred. He told police he'd been on his cellphone when he hit the Honda.

He was charged with driving while intoxicated as well as criminal possession of a controlled substance, after officers reported finding one Xanax pill in his pants pocket for which he did not have a prescription. Both cars were towed by Marshall and Sons Service Station. Mr. Bari was arraigned the next morning before East Hampton Town Justice Steven Tekulsky, and will be back in court in the future.

On Saturday night, after clocking Pauline Lord's 2012 Porsche at 47 miles per hour in a 30-m.p.h. zone, police stopped her on Cedar Street near Stephen Hand's Path. The New York City resident, 36, appeared intoxicated, they said, and performed poorly on field sobriety tests. Charged with misdemeanor D.W.I., a first offense, she was held overnight for a morning arraignment before Justice Tekulsky, who released her on her own recognizance with a future court date.

Bryam Chalco of East Hampton, 22, was pulled over on the night of Aug. 2 after police noticed that his Nissan Rogue had insufficient tail lamps, only one license plate, and an "obstructed driver's view." He was charged eventually with misdemeanor drunken driving, a first offense, and arraigned in the morning before Justice Lisa R. Rana.

Volunteers Answer the Call of Duty

“No one wants to get out of bed, having just climbed in. And it’s a really cold night, and it’s windy, and everything else — but you know that everyone else will be feeling the same, and so you go anyway. Everyone jumps in their cars and drives there, and then you deal with whatever is going on.”
