The fraud department at eTrade called a Mako Lane resident last Thursday afternoon to ask if she really intended to open multiple accounts. It turned out to be someone using her name and driver's license. The scam was shut down before any money was transferred.
East Hampton
The owner of Moby's called police at 7:20 p.m. on June 2 about a stranger he'd just encountered walking up the stairs from the restaurant's basement. The owner stopped him and asked what he was doing there. The man got away and hopped into a dark blue Mercedes with two passengers inside. The person sitting behind the driver was a former employee, the owner told police, adding that he believed the group had been looking for alcohol. Officers located the car and told its occupants that charges would not be pressed, but warned them not to return to the restaurant.
East Hampton Village
A caller reported a dog alone in an unattended Hyundai on Park Place last Thursday morning. An officer said the dog seemed okay but waited for the return of the owner, who said that "the dog refused to get out of the vehicle and I was only gone for a moment."
Montauk
Gregory Verity filed a police report on May 31 saying that his 2017 homemade light trailer had been stolen from the south side of the town launching ramp on West Lake Drive. He had parked it there the week before, he said.
On Saturday at 11:30 a.m., a Sycamore Lane resident was alerted to a trespasser on her property by her Ring doorbell. Nothing was disturbed, she told police.
An unknown person was reported to be "unplugging appliances" at the Montauk General Store on Friday at around 7 a.m. Shortly after, another call reported that someone had gained access, using a hidden key, to the Carillo law office in the same complex. Police are investigating, but said that nothing appeared to be missing.
Sag Harbor
The owner of a 19-foot boat docked at Havens Beach last saw his 2021 beach sticker at 9:30 a.m. on June 9. On June 14 at 7:30 p.m., he reported it stolen, and told police the thief had had a go at the 2020 sticker too, without success. He was advised to get a new beach sticker.
She was "documenting trees on the property to assess plans submitted to the village board," a woman told the Division Street homeowner who had asked what she was doing on the property. The woman, whom police did not recognize as someone who worked for the village, said she was not on private property, but on the village right of way.
Black Swan Antiques called in a "screaming female who walked in the store and started screaming" last week. She left before police arrived.
Last Thursday at around 1 p.m., a parent told police he was locked out of his car, but his child was locked in it, and sweating from the rising temperature. An officer broke the front passenger window to get the keys.
A woman making a transaction at the Chase Bank Friday afternoon "became enraged, yelling and cursing," a bank employee told police. She had gone by the time officers arrived, and the employee would not give them her name, as her branch manager had said it was not allowed. The woman returned to the bank not long after and again began causing a disturbance, at which time the manager thought it might be best to tell police her name after all. She was told to take her business henceforth to another bank.
On Friday around 10:30 p.m., an impatient juvenile reportedly served himself from the frozen yogurt dispenser at BuddhaBerry, dispensing the yogurt into his mouth. He and his friends were escorted out and told that was their last visit to the store.
Friday night at 10:30 was also the last time a Howard Street resident saw his 2019 Mercedes-Benz G Wagon. He called police about it on Saturday morning and law enforcement promptly tracked it to Passaic, N.J. Local police found that the New York-registered vehicle had already had its plates swapped for temporary Texas plates. Officers towed the car to an impound lot.
The landlord of a Madison Street residence is reportedly trying to evict a tenant who has had many issues in the past with a couple who live in the same building; they now hold an order of protection against her. The problematic tenant phoned police on Saturday at 10:30 p.m., saying that the landlord had barged into her apartment to demand she sign paperwork, which, she said, she ripped up. She also complained that in late May a handyman had changed an exterior lock, and that the landlord refused to give her the keys.
Southampton Town police had a warrant out, on a charge of violating a stay-away order, for a woman who made the mistake Sunday morning of calling police to ask if they knew of "a dog-friendly hotel." When Sag police heard her name, they let their colleagues know they could come collect her from the Gulf gas station.
Springs
A possible prowler was reported on Glade Road around 1 a.m. last Thursday. Officers responded after a resident reported hearing someone brush up against a rear sliding door, accompanied by a flash of light in the backyard, but they did not find anything suspicious.
Wainscott
Damage to the perimeter snow fencing of a beachfront property was reported on Beach Lane on the afternoon of June 16. The resident said the same had happened the week before, and that the fence was partially burnt with empty cans of White Claw hard seltzer strewn about. Police said they would advise marine patrols to pay attention to the area.
