Driver Charged in Gansett Crash

Thu, 07/08/2021 - 09:05

Alcohol is reported to have played a part in an accident on June 25 at 1 p.m. in Amagansett. East Hampton Town Police said Jeffrey Sanderlin of Riverhead, 49, "failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway" where Old Stone Highway and Eastwood Court intersect. His 2004 Toyota veered off the road and hit a tree.

Mr. Sanderlin, who performed poorly on a field sobriety test, complained of chest pain and was taken to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital by Amagansett ambulance. Bonac Buy and Sell towed the car. He was to be arraigned this morning in East Hampton Town Justice Court on a charge of driving while intoxicated.

Three other recent arrests did not involve alcohol. Robert Cullen, 22, of Little Falls, N.J., was accused by town police of driving without a license, a misdemeanor, in Montauk on Monday around 5 p.m. His 2019 Jeep was near the intersection of Carl Fisher Plaza and Montauk Highway when police pulled it over. He will be in court on July 21.

Marvin Garcia, 41, of Riverhead was stopped on June 29 at 10 a.m. at the intersection of Madison Street and Jermain Avenue in Sag Harbor and charged with aggravated unlicensed and unregistered driving, both misdemeanors. Sag Harbor Village police said he caught their attention after disobeying a stop sign. He was arraigned in the village court on  Friday.

On Monday morning, after failing to yield the right of way for a Sag Harbor squad car, Stacy Engman, 44, of New York City drove her 2000 Jaguar into the oncoming lane on Howard Street, according to Sag police. An officer caught up with her in the driveway of a Main Street house, where she was charged with unlicensed driving.

Ms. Engman was also cited for driving with expired insurance and failing to yield, which are violations. She is expected in Sag Harbor court on Wednesday.
