Amagansett

"An opossum disoriented in the roadway" was taken from Atlantic Avenue by the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center at about 9 a.m. on Aug. 4.

East Hampton

The restaurant Buongiorno on the Harbor reported on Sunday around 1:30 a.m. that a car had done a doughnut in the parking lot, kicking up gravel and scratching a Jeep's paint job. The bartender identified the patron responsible and police were reported to be following up.

A handwritten note showed up in an Orchard Lane resident's mailbox on July 29 saying that her pool pump was broken, that it was very loud, and requesting that she turn it off. The next day an unknown person entered her backyard and unplugged the pump. A repair company was to have arrived last week.

East Hampton Village

An Aug. 2 police report indicated trouble at a catered party on Briar Patch Road. One worker, "while performing his duties at a dinner party," was approached by another and told to go fill up the guests' wine glasses. The first man told the other that the host had said "they did not want to be disturbed for a bit," after which his colleague "dragged him to a side room" and told him to wait in the car until the party ended.

Damage to the grass sod in front of his house drove a Mill Hill Lane resident to seek help from law enforcement on the afternoon of Aug. 2. Police reported that a vehicle was likely responsible.

A 26-year-old man found asleep on the ground on Cedar Street early Friday morning told police he'd been "out with friends and got tired" and wanted to sleep. An officer helped him into an Uber at around 2 a.m.

Later that morning police assisted with the transport of a woman, who called from Main Street to say she'd been trying to schedule a taxi pickup with no success. An officer flagged down an East Hampton Free Ride for her.

 A library patron not wearing a mask Saturday morning declined to give his name, but left as soon as police arrived.

The 17-year-old host of a Saturday night party on Conklin Terrace blamed "unwanted guests" for the loud noise that neighbors had complained of. They intruders were gone by the time police drove up.

Montauk

Kirk Park beach was struck by bathroom bandits sometime between July 31 and Aug. 2. A town employee reported "green scorch and soot marks left behind as a result of smoke bombs being set off in the building," damaging the front walk ramp and the men's room walls. Over at Ditch Plain, the same worker found that the urinal partitions had been removed from the walls.

A month after it allegedly happened, a guest at the Lido Motel made a report to police of a July 18 incident, saying she'd returned to her room at 3 a.m. and found her belongings strewn about on the grass out front. Inside, the room was "full of garbage, with a bunch of bees on her bed." Items in her dresser drawer were "covered in shampoo and other creams," she said, and her passport, debit card, and money were all missing from the night stand.

A five-person brawl took place just before midnight on July 31 outside Shagwong Tavern. According to police, it included a set of brothers, a bouncer, and a woman. Highlights featured a fraternal tussle, a punch from the woman to the bouncer, and later, a punch from the bouncer to the woman.

Three others were found fighting the next night, again around midnight, on Carl Fisher Plaza. Police found one man with cuts to his finger and mouth and detained another who was attempting to run away; both were "highly intoxicated," according to the report. The third man got away. Police said neither man present wanted to press charges.

Sag Harbor

A customer at BuddhaBerry was told to leave the premises on the afternoon of Aug. 4 after taking pictures of employees and staying for an hour in the limited seating area. The man became "irate," the owner told an officer, after being informed that customers could stay for only 20 minutes. He was "uncooperative" with the officer as well, but eventually left.

A drunken man, found lying down on Rose Street last Thursday afternoon, told police "his girlfriend had just left him." He was escorted back to his nearby boat.

A Scott Foil road bike that retails for over $1,000 was reported stolen after a homeowner left it out back of his Hampton Street house on Friday afternoon.

At 1 a.m. Saturday, a man reported his black 2015 Jeep stolen. He'd left it in a loading area on Bay Street with the engine running, he told police, while he and his fiancŽe took a short dinghy ride to their boat and back. With the help of an officer, using Find My iPhone since his was still in the car, he located both car and phone across the street.

Law enforcement responded to Hempstead Street around 5:30 a.m. on Sunday in answer to a complaint about "yelling in French." They encountered neither monsieur nor madame.

Springs

The mirror in the women's restroom at the Maidstone Park baseball field was removed sometime between noon on July 30 and 3:15 p.m. on Aug. 2, when a town employee discovered it gone.

On Flaggy Hole Road last Thursday, a homeowner woke up to find his front screen door broken and an unknown man sleeping in his car. Police said the stranger was intoxicated, though he introduced himself and apologized to the homeowner, saying that he last remembered being in Hampton Bays and did not know how he ended up at the house. No charges were filed, but the resident requested $500 from the young man over Venmo for the screen door, which he sent before his father picked him up.

Wainscott

Someone keyed her Land Rover on the afternoon of Aug. 2, likely while she was at the post office, a woman told police, creating a large scratch from front to back. She said it would cost $5,000 to repaint.

Long Days on the Fire Line In Orange County

East Hampton and Amagansett firefighters volunteered to head north last week to help fight a 5,000-acre wildfire in Orange County, N.Y., not once but twice, battling unfamiliar terrain to do so. “They fight fires completely differently than we do when we have a brush fire,” the Amagansett chief said.

Awards for Good Policing in Handgun Scuffle

“It could have gone worse. We’re lucky that I have officers here that weren’t shot,” said Police Chief Jeff Erickson at Friday’s East Hampton Village Board meeting. Chief Erickson was recognizing Sgt. Wayne Gauger and Officers John Clark and Robbie Greene for a traffic stop on Aug. 31 that turned into a scuffle and the eventual confiscation of an illegal gun.

A Three Mile Harbor Drive resident reported an online dating scam on the afternoon of Nov. 16. Somehow, said the 80-year-old man, a person on the dating platform had gotten his phone number and demanded $2,000 from him, threatening to tell his family he was using the site if he did not comply. Police told the man to block the number.
